Another thought about OOP.As Alan Kay explains, It models objects communicating with each other in the physical space, by sharing messages. But it's too easy to make a rebuttal:Objects are complex. That's why we use abstractions, symbols, logic and math to reason about things. You probably don't want to work with an object, but a simple model of it.You want F=ma, not a real planet and a timer to calculate how much time it takes for an apple to fall.

Pretty much everyone agrees choosing the right data structure is a fundamental step in the development process of _any_ program.Yet, OOP languages seem to hate working with data structures. Many of them don't have literals for hashmaps, keywords (or symbols), dates, ...Many of them don't have generic abstractions on how to manipulate the data: no map, reduce, filter...But why!?? I don't understand

@alcinnz I'm more scared about the new Microsoft Pluton chip, which takes DRM to the next level and could remove any kind of introspection over the code running over your computer.DRM is mainly made to control _reproduction of media_ files on certified hardware and certified software, but it can be broken.Microsoft Pluton can attestate and control _any code executed_ on "your" PC.Related lobsters discussion: https://lobste.rs/s/fdguww/dangers_microsoft_pluton

I think Meta's take on the metaverse is dumb, even economically wise.Look at the game VR Chat. It doesn't take much money and time to develop something like that.Yet, VR Chat is one of the best representations of a metaverse.Meta is investing billions of dollars into the metaverse, and their dumb universe is still worse than VR Chat.

@splitshockvirus @lawrencegripper I've heard AR glasses aren't great for desktop computing because the resolution is too low to read text comfortably for a long time. Can you say otherwise?

If you delete the Program Files folder on windows 11, you get the older version (found on windows 10) of- the taskbar- the file explorer- the task manager- ...Source: https://youtu.be/BVIN_PJu2rsWhat even is this mess, how many layers of bloat does windows have. It doesn't make any sense.

@OpenComputeDesign iphones can/could do it. Many android phones also have a similar feature, but it's not commonly talked about. It's called "One handed mode" or something similar.

Libadwaita is translated in Friulian? Wtf!?!?It's a dying, small language, mostly talked only in Friuli, in the North-East of Italy.I don't even know if you can select it as a system language. At this point I should also add a translation to my local Italian language, Piemontese, which has even more speakers than Friulian!Sadly I don't know enough of Piemontese to speak it. In urban areas only people older than 60 can speak it fluently. This phrase has stuck with me"Unit tests can only prove that something does NOT work correctly".If they fail, there's clearly something that doesn't work. But if they pass, they can't ensure the tested function works for _every_ input. It just happens that for some inputs the test is passing.Or maybe you think the test is passing, but in reality it's not executed at all, but you don't notice that.

I think my next project will be a little voice assistant running locally. Now that we have llamafile https://github.com/Mozilla-Ocho/llamafile running an AI locally has become simpler than ever.I just need to write a program which listens for a keyword like "Hey Google" in the background, then transcribes the spoken text with whisper.cpp and then feeds the transcription to llamafile. Finally, I need to find a decent open source TTS capable of running on the CPU in realtime. Then I build a GTK UI to show the current conversation, and I package everything as a flatpak.

Since the AI is going to run locally, it can read your clipboard without any privacy issues. I plan on using LLaVa as the underlying model, because it's multimodal, so that you could copy an image and then ask "Hey Lava, can you describe the image in the clipboard?".

A lot of men don't have any emotional control other than "I MUST NOT CRY, EVER".Those people scare the shit out of me. When they get angry, there's no way to deescalate the conversation, and they get violent, dangerous, and they start breaking things. You can tell they don't have any control on themselves anymore.Emotional control is more than "learn to never cry again". In fact, crying sometimes is the best thing you can do to help yourself

What a strange feeling. I'm always insecure about everything I do. I overthink a lot. Too much. But right now, I feel deeply concentrated and confident. I wish I could unlock this feeling more often. If only I knew how...

For the past months I've been working on a distrobox client in #gtk #libadwaita. This is a sneak peek of what it looks like. What's distrobox?"Use any Linux distribution inside your terminal. Enable both backward and forward compatibility with software and freedom to use whatever distribution you’re more comfortable with"
