BTW the 2.2s to launch Nozbe is on an older PC. It's about 1s on my workstation, and I think with some effort I can •cut it in half•.For comparison, the iOS app launches in less time than iOS's app open animation! (On my iPhone 12 mini). Now that's properly fast!

Now what I think is hilarious is that even if you give MS Teams an unfair advantage of running natively on an arm64 machine (virtualized), while the competitor is running emulated, it's still easily ~2x slower

We're getting pretty close to •full• disassembly of @hswaw's new (old) milling machine.Putting it back together should be easier, right? Right?

@domi @lanodan @hswaw I think this is just for out-of-band management (i.e. fixing the network if we accidentally cut off the branch we're sitting on), at least as is configured now - it's not connected to the edge router, just the mgmt switch.

@lanodan @domi @hswaw also, fun fact - we did, briefly, have an experimental Starlink backup uplink

How it feels like to have found 256GB of forgotten-about DDR4 RAM in this economy (at @hswaw / @bgpwtf )

I bet your Apple M1 machine does not have 25Gbit networking.I bet your SFP28 NIC does not have a Lightning port.

I don't know what y'all do for fun but I started writing a C compiler in my RISC-V macroassembler. So far, I sketched out a tokenizer. Parsing is next!

@rysiek to a certain extent, I understand the attitude of “hey, this is just a hobby project, I made it for free, don’t expect *anything*”. I too dislike the entitled attitude of users of open source stuff.*but* the moment this “toy project” became wildly popular, he should have taken down the website and put a big fat warning on GitHub to scare away people who are not experts (but have at least two brain cells). It’s this part that’s, as you said — utterly negligent.

IEEE 1101.1/Eurocard/Eurorack subracks ought to be more popular among hobbyists.19''x1U is an awkward form factor for most small or custom gear. On the other hand, you can fit a lot of stuff on a 3U subrack when you have 5mm/0.2'' granularity in horizontal spacing. (This mini-PC isn't even a great example since it's *this close* to fitting vertically)

@mjg59 This doesn't feel right to me. IMO few people actually object to use of LLMs by individuals for tinkering on personal stuff. The criticism as I see it is primarily that:1) there are huge societal/political impacts - uncompensated use of copyrighted material; benefits of it accruing primarily to a few big players; energy use; layoffs; perceived misallocation of massive amounts of capital2) the output quality of LLMs is t r a s h, unsuitable for professional use
