This is a very in-depth github readme about a new fully decentralized social platform. It explains everything pretty openly about how they handle customizable algorithms, how they handle caching and indexing. Definitely worth looking into this and trying it out. https://github.com/riftdweb/rift

Telegram channels are better than a Pleroma feed.If there is no algorithmic curation of the one feed, it’s better to just let me quickly and easily catch up with each channel individually. Now we must either make a decentralized version of Telegram channels, or add transparent algorithms to Pleroma feed. (algorithm here can also include the bare minimum of de-duping content)

Federated Mints changes the game for Bitcoin. It adds true privacy to transactions and could even work with Lightning for cheap transactions. Existing federated servers on Pleroma, Matrix, Urbit could become their own banks, providing not just communication but also financial services to their guys. https://blockstream.com/2021/10/28/en-blockstream-sponsors-minimint-a-privacy-focused-community-led-scaling-solution-for-bitcoin/

Pay attention to this Synonym company. They are building #bitcoin decentralized tech solutions- Blocktank Lightning server that an admin can run to provide non-custodial channels for all their users- Tokens on the #LightningNetwork that can represent anything from subscriptions to hamburgers- accounts, contact management, feeds: all without needing its own blockchain

the grand irony of @peertube is that all we really want is the bare bones messaging/social network and a simple video host like https://streamja.comWe just want the content. It was a fluke that the social aspect of youtube stuck around and became like TV channels. But for most cases, emulating YouTube is too heavy. We just want to share the video links around. The existing messaging/social network provides the social context already. #fediverse

Everyone should be looking into Nostr right now. this sounds similar to https://github.com/fiatjaf/nostrsome problems with nostr though are:lack of deletes. whoever can delete the data, owns the data. so basically the relays own the datadoesn’t build on activitypub in any way. there may be bridges to it, but it would make sense to just use activitypub protocol and be compatible

       > maybe slightly better since a delete from one instance is a delete from every instance.Exactly. Because you’re just sharing an IPFS address right? If the owner tombstones it, the IPFS address leads to nothing. Wait, so a user can’t choose who relays their data? it just gets flood gossiped to everyone by default? What is the point of follows at that point? There would be many many many people that I would not want to give access to my data lol

@alex Are you going to make activitypub do nostr things though? The achilles heal of AP is identity being locked into one server. Identities really should just be keypairs. Use web of trust to reduce spam. Thing is, a core AP developer said he was working on account independence 2 years ago. Seems like no progress has been made. It makes me think that censorship is seen as a feature of AP. If they remove the ability for AP server admins to have absolute control, they lose their main audience (megalomaniacs).

@alex consequently, it was also evangelicals that were 90% of the Harry Potter fanbase in the 90s. It wasn’t so cut and dry like that

@alex will bridging to Nostr be explicitly opt-in? because when your post goes into Nostr, you basically lose all control of it. You have no ability to delete it once it’s out there

@alex How do we know which instances are bridged to nostr? Also there is no delete “event”. There is a flag that tells a server “you may delete this”. It’s a courtesy to the server for if they want to prune their database to save space. It’s not like Farcaster where “delete” is an opcode that relays follow.

@alex maybe it is just the culture of NOSTR people that suck in that case then. no clients implement it because they think if you can’t have a *guarantee* of deletion, then you shouldn’t have the option at all.

@Moon @alex is key rotation like that even possible without a server coordinating it? if your device is compromised then everything is compromised anyway. so it’s a trade off for sure

@alex > You’d likely do some libsignal thing which becomes painful to scale after there are about 100 participants in the group. All you need to do is distribute a shared secret to the list of people you want to post to. When you update the list, you send a new shared secret. It doesn’t need to be that complicated.

@alex I am talking about private posts. Like posting to friends only on facebook vs posting publicly to the world. That is all you need in order to solve the problem that you talked about.
