@futurebird @discoursology Our school went to devices in 2020 for remote school and our kiddo in kindergarten got an ipad (with a plastic case!). But the kids 3rd grade and up got chunky pretty physically robust Windows laptops which is what she has now, though it doesn't come home often now.

@futurebird Due to excess optimism about new technology and underfunding, a lot of US state govt services for the blind and low vision (& some NGOs) deprioritized braille. A lot of folks do use screen readers and text to speech most of the time. Text to speech is often very unlike "standard" written English for various registers. It's hard to speak to a computer in a way that results in text that reads like it wasn't spoken. Very hard.

@futurebird @moh_kohn The coffee shop analogy was how I explained moderation many years ago. If a guy showed up at a cafe and was being gross to people amd butting into conversations unwanted, you'd expect him to be kicked out or the shop would lose business. But too many think somehow shouldn't adhere even to that basic standard.

I am trying to improve my reading in #Braille by reading books I know well, currently The Fellowship of the Ring but WTBBL's version is in the older English Braille which does some funky stuff that UEB doesn't do. Plus I just don't know punctuation & formatting rules that well.

@futurebird @alexwild Reading the linked thread (well the first 7 comments or so) it seems like there's a use case for machine learning based language models but bringing GOOGLE of all companies in makes one expect the "quality" highlighted in google search AI results and, well, that seems like an association you'd want to avoid at all costs.
