@Darkness_89 @DissidentKitty Welsh is spoken by about 1/4 of the population of Wales (and a strong majority in some parts), and it has ~equal status to English in Wales.

fucked up when people want software to lie in order to give people a false sense of securitye.g. the Mastodon “Delete” button, non-e2e “private” messages, etc.

(Mastodon’s “Delete” button would be more accurately named “Retract” — I’m not arguing for the button not to exist)

@alexandria a CVE is probably not appropriate because it’s not a vulnerability in widely-used software, but in custom software only in use by them, if I’m understanding correctly.Deadlines for vulnerability disclosures are most commonly 90 days, in my experience. Is the company in the EU? If so, the Information Commissioner’s Office might like to know, but otoh be careful and do some research, because hacking laws aren’t always friendly to security research.

this situation sure has made it clear who are our real comrades and who just presents as anti-authoritarian when it’s convenient, huh?

Reading “Does Information Really Want to be Free? Indigenous Knowledge Systems and the Question of Openness”“Boateng highlights the creation of the public domain as a beneficial category for Western nations wanting to produce their own resources (and then limit the resources’ use) by building on indigenous resources without acknowledgment or redress.”https://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc/article/download/1618/828

I don't think I'm very likely to come back to regularly beinghere. I've been thinking about it a lot recently, and I just think the incentives that the design of microblogging creates are too unhealthy. The best way to play is to be loud, and to just ignore or shoot down constructive responses rather than engage with them. Even if we don't want to be like that, we'restill encouraged to be by the design (the system, if you will.)

It's sad — there are some lovely people here. But the thought of coming back fills me with dread because of how bad it makes me feel to have awful takes shoved in front of my face that the poster isn't interested in engaging with beyond broadcasting it and being congratulated for their perfect opinion. The design of microblogging pushes us towards broadcast, not to converse with or relate to each other, and I don't think it's a healthy way to interact. Other online spaces are not like this.

I've been pushed to use microblogging this way as much as anybody, and in my post history are some takes that I knew would hurt people who saw them and who clearly disagreed, but that I felt encouraged to post anyway for reasons that are difficult to put into words. And who the hell am I to shove what I think onto other people's timelines? Why should they care what I think?

This post doesn't seem to be getting shared nearly as much as the #nvidia announcement, which is a shame because it explains all the big picture stuff everybody is wondering about.https://blogs.gnome.org/uraeus/2022/05/11/why-is-the-open-source-driver-release-from-nvidia-so-important-for-linux/
