@kai Slightly modifying this makes it even better:Steve lives next door.Steve mows his lawn (at dawn).Steve watches football (with the curtains closed and a tap running).Sometimes beers go missing from your fridge and you see Steve in his garden drinking beers of the same brand.Steve.

@kai I'm in a weird mood today. I blame it on not-at-all-unusual-there's-definitely-nothing-wrong record breaking temperatures here.

@kai We've got mini-trump now (Boris). It's like a perpetual hold-my-beer contest.

@kai do you code already? The two things can definitely complement each other if it helps to motivate a software job.

@kai it’s the kind of thing which only takes off when it’s your job for some, or at least it was for me!

Do I go freelance, or get another job? Part of me longs for the freedom of the former, but not the chasing clients for payment or paperwork. The latter comes with paid holiday too. 🤔

@kai Yeah, it's a horrible thought. I think I should be able to curate a list of reliable clients over time though...

@kai I'm still conflicted. I'm naturally risk averse, so even with the perceived advantages, I'm less likely to pick freelance.

@fribbledom Right after I signed up I got the security advisories email for this week, so mine are all just bland dependency version bumps. 🤷♂️

The solution to process fatigue killing creativity is definitely a new, separate process for creative things.

This process must include a committee and lots of google docs and other docs which are in Confluence so you always look in the wrong place first.

Heaven forbid you trust your engineers a little and allocate them a % of their time to learn, try things out, and generally play *without* getting caught up in Enterprise Grade Bullshit.

This point is *so* important. Time to play with code and design outside of work is a privilege not all of us have. If you want engineers to improve then formal practices like training and conferences are good, but nothing will ever beat play, and formal practices don't promote creativity.
