@realcaseyrollins @feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows Jesus fuck! Not this old chestnut again!Join me in the wayback machine, OK?On December 14, 2012, a man suffering from untreated mental illness attacked an elderly woman with a weapon before entering the grounds of a nearby primary school. Using that same weapon he started attacking children with abandon. Before he was finally stopped and taken into custody 24 people (all but one children) were wounded.(...cont...)

@realcaseyrollins @feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows Now at this point the date and the events are likely not matching in your mind. That's because the date is the date of **two** primary school attacks. One was the one you're thinking of: Sandy Hook Elementary. The other was the one you likely didn't hear about because the shocking slaughter of children in your own country concealed it: Chenpeng Village Primary School.(...cont...)

@realcaseyrollins @feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows It is instructive, however, to compare these two attacks, their impacts, and what happened subsequently.Instructive to the USA. Which is the part that likely galls the Manifest Destiny country. The main difference between these attacks is that the attacker in one had access to a gun. The other attacker had to steal a knife. Because of this *all of the victims survived* (though the elderly woman later died of a heart attack).(...cont...)

@realcaseyrollins @feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows So psycho attacks a primary school with a gun and kills 26, injures 2. Psycho attacks a primary school with a knife and kills 0 (or 1, maybe, depending on how you want to count it) and injures 24 (or 23).So FUCK YES I'll GLADLY switch out gun attacks for knife attacks! Jesus fucking CHRIST do you have to be stupid to think that this is even remotely similar in impact! But ... the lesson doesn't even end there.(...cont...)

@realcaseyrollins @feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows There had been a spate of psychos attacking children in China beginning in 2010. 2012's was the biggest and most shocking one. And unlike the USA, the Chinese government took action. They didn't do something stupid and impractical like banning knives, though, because knives, unlike guns, are actually needed in day-to-day society. (The weapon used was a kitchen knife, after all!)(...cont...)

@realcaseyrollins @feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows What they did was ordered a review of all schools' security nationwide, then the implementation of enhanced security measures. And again this didn't mean X-raying children's backpacks. It meant providing security gates, security guards, and mancatchers (NOT GUNS!) in the security room and/or classrooms. It took about a year for all schools to be brought up to code, and the cops did extra work around schools in the mean time.(...cont...)

@realcaseyrollins @feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows After a year the cops stood down from the extra duty (Chinese cops are incredibly fucking lazy and prone to being absentee) as schools brought their security measures up to par. And since then there hasn't been a school attack of note.Total period of increasing risk: 3 years; effectiveness of implemented solution: 11 years and counting without a major attack. And note: the solution involved arming security guards and teachers ... with polearms.

@feld @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows @realcaseyrollins Absolutely. And it's easier to flee a knifeman than a bullet. And you can control a knifeman with a mancatcher, but a gunman ... not so easily. And knives are nowhere near as lethal as guns. And ...Anybody who thinks that you'll just be "trading" gun deaths for knife deaths if you ban guns is ignorant, stupid, or both.Or is selling something that goes "BANG!"...

@SlicerDicer @Sundae_Gurl @Jgmeadows The world we live in ... if you narrowly put a circle around your little parochial neck of the woods. The overwhelming majority of the world seems to get by just fine without ammosexuality.

@killedincars @mayonesa @Popehat The bio should clear up any confusion: "Not a contrarian but a naturalist realist."Translation from bullshit to English: A "contrarian" (which is itself a reskinning of the word "asshole").

@mayonesa @killedincars @Popehat Discussion? The only discussion I took part in was one explaining your idiot, off-topic rant via your bio.I have no opinion on the NYT that's worth expressing given a) I don't read it and b) I don't give a flying fuck about American politics. (Especially when "not a contrarian" types like you dominate it.)

@aral @codinghorror Are we sure that Jeff Atwood isn't an early LLM experiment? The straight-up overconfidence as he spouts completely incorrect and ignorant shit feels an awful lot like ChatGPT and its coterie of concussed digital parrots.Oh, wait. The "voice" of these is modelled after what techbrodudes think sounds smart. I may have put the teleological cart before the horse.

@futurebird I largely agree, but I can't help but remember the virus age in the '80s.I worked at a company where a business VP (not a techie) wanted to introduce unnecessarily convoluted rules to protect the company from viruses. His justification was that he'd been infected five times in the past month and KNEW how these things worked.I pointed out that I'd not ever suffered a virus infection and that perhaps we should be listening to the people who didn't get infected for policy.๐Ÿงต (1/n)
