@john if a real meat-bag signs up, joins conversations, and starts spewing bullshit… they get banned. Same thing for a bit-bag. The problem is that bit-bag bots have low spin up costs, which we’ve seen before in email spam. Same answer: a spam-assassin gatekeeper that uses human reinforced Bayesian to fight on the same playing field.

@john I’ve had very good experience with anti spam, so I guess that’s different. The point I’m making is that any technical advance is available to defenders as well as attackers.

@john off and on. You could be right, that this tech is an ink in water situation that can’t be undone. In which case yes, game over for this form of internet socialization. He’s not on Mastodon, but the network described in Peter Watts’s Rifters trilogy is what I imagine that outcome to look like https://rifters.com/

@john one side note…stress on the word “automated”. Very little automation actually works as anything more than a supervised aid to humans if the domain is complex. Spam and SEO are a good example, and I suspect AI powered bot fights will fit there too. Too much changes too fast in ways that never get encoded for machine use. The internet scraping behind modern “AI” is an attempt to get around it… but GIGO applies.

@john totally, that’s the garbage in garbage out problem with using the internet as a source data pile. Either tag your output (in which case good guys can stop it), freeze your inputs (in which case you drift from norms and can be identified), or spiral into a weird feedback loop of noise.

They should have included the part in Empire Strikes Back where Luke has to spend days convincing the fleet master that he can requisition an X-Wing to go to Dagobah on a religious training exercise. He probably had to go to Leia, “will you tell this guy to give me a ship?” “Sure Luke, I’ve got nothing better to do while we flee the destruction of our base”

@futurebird not gonna claim that a zojirushi is really doing the fuzzy logic thing, but fuzzy logic is a thing. Some books:* Fuzzy Thinking: The New Science of Fuzzy Logic https://a.co/d/4cTAz2V* Fuzzy Logic for Business and Industry (DOS Windows) https://a.co/d/93VpNh4I used to work with Earl Cox, really smart guy

@fl0_id @jwz compromising on principles means you don’t have them. Which means you’re left with no way to distinguish yourself from a crowded marketplace. Which means you’re competing with price. That works poorly when your competitor is a free loss-leader establishing a moat for a different, related business (not even looking at said competitor’s financial ties to Mozilla). So with principles and price off the table, how is it competitive at all? Mild technical differences, and branding. Might as well have folded up shop instead.

@futurebird I read that too, and yeah, skimmed their internal dialogue in order to get on with the caving. Would not reread.
