Either that or I'll do a segment where I recommend against some real product and explain why it's bad, like how NordVPN belongs to a company founded by someone who also used to lead an adware/spyware company [citation needed, I only have a vague memory of hearing this], forever burning any potential bridges with sponsors.

I don't have a music taste. I open up YouTube and just type "music" in the search bar and hope for the best.

Okay so Mathematica actually managed to solve this nasty integral, giving a mostly correct looking result. But how can I trust it? I don't understand how it did that.

A magician comes up to you and says "Randomly pick a number. Any number." But what measure do you use? You can not distribute your choices evenly over the set of all numbers, even when you restrict it to integers and if you had an infinite amount of time to say it out loud, because any finite number would be incredibly close to zero compared to other numbers in the set. Do you pick an arbitrary cutoff and only consider numbers in that range? Do you use a normal distribution so that every number has a chance to get picked but unreasonably large ones get weighed less? What should the parameters be of that distribution? What is a reasonable measure when asked for "any random number?"Once you have made your choice the magician is gone, as well as your wallet.

Oh, you think today's inflation is bad? You don't wanna know what it was like 10⁻³⁶ seconds after the big bang.

Last week I posted about my impression of Oppenheimer. I liked it but some parts were a bit boring or tedious to watch.Today I saw its sequel, Barbie. It was really good! I can recommend it much more strongly and broadly than Oppenheimer. Enjoyed it all the way through. Don't worry, you don't need to have seen the first movie to understand Barbie - there is a time skip of several decades and it tells its own unique story.

Watched the newest #Kurzgesagt video on destroying #BlackHoles. Pretty meh, they're perpetuating some common misconceptions and over-dramatize a highly unlikely scenario in my opinion. Here is my list of things I think are misconceptions or misrepresentations of the truth:#1: "Time and space switch role at the event horizon". Time and space are just coordinates of spacetime, you can choose your coordinate system however you like. Yes, in Schwarzschild coordinates the variable that is timelike outside the event horizon is spacelike inside. But in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates no such switch happens, and both are just as valid. The correct statement to make is: "Once inside the event horizon, all possible trajectories you can take lead you to the singularity in the future." Leave out the misleading and confusing "time and space switch roles" stuff.#2: I haven't researched it deeply, but from a quick glance over the search results for "naked singularity penrose diagram" it looks like this wouldn't even be the case for a naked singularity, since the singularity would lie in the infinite future, and the "time-space" switch (in Schwarzschild coordinates) would happen at the event-horizon, which doesn't exist anymore. But I invested five seconds into this, if anyone knows more I'd like to hear from you.#3: I think the vast majority of physicists would agree there is no reason to expect singularities to actually exist. They are a prediction of general relativity in a regime where we have no right to expect it to be valid. So I feel it's a misrepresentation to claim "oh the singularity inside could destroy all of physics if exposed!". The true statement to make is "we don't know what happens in the region where GR predicts a singularity because we do not have a theory that is valid in those conditions".#4: They make it seem much more likely to be possible to overfeed a black hole, portraying it as "Common wisdom says it's impossible. But some researchers have found a possible loophole! However, most scientists remain skeptical." In their sources it's a bit clearer: two papers exists where people have calculated a loophole based on an approximation (pretending the mass you throw into the BH does not influence the spacetime), and more rigorous calculations that take the back-reaction into account show the loopholes are actually impossible. "Scientists remain skeptical" is an understatement when the effects in question have been ruled out mathematically.Overall it's not the most terrible video on black holes out there, the majority of popular science explanations are way worse. They brought up some effects that aren't usually talked about much and have nice animation, so it does the job of spreading interest in black hole physics. Just take Kurzgesagt with a grain of salt.

By the way, the truth about black holes is fantastic enough, they don't need over-dramatization. There is so much to them that never gets talked about in pop-sci, and it's so much weirder and mind-bending than anything Kurzgesagt or the like have focused on... I'm reading papers that have gedankenexperiments involving battles that could be straight out of a shōnen manga, theorems involving devastating walls of fire, possibilities that put your entire understanding of the world on its head... Much of it is conjecture still, but this is how the actual research feels to me. I hope someday to be able to properly convey the poetry I experience while also being completely factual. (Disclaimer: I'm still far from being an expert on black holes.)
