I just (probably very belatedly) noticed LibreOffice doesn't use a 3.5" floppy disk icon anymore for the "save file" action. I feel a bit sad (and old) now at the loss of digital cultural legacy.I remember I read this funny phrase somewhere: "The floppy disk is like Jesus, both died to become the icon of saving"..

🇳🇱 Is de rest van de Nederlandse fediverse er al uit op welke kandidaat te stemmen volgende week? Ik zoek nog steeds naar een progressieve kandidaat met digitale expertise én een realistische kans verkozen te worden; ik kan ze niet vinden! Hoewel partijen als GL/PvdA, D66 & Volt aardige punten in hun programma's hebben op dit gebied, zie ik weinig kandidaten die een realistische kans maken de kamer in te komen en zulke expertise daadwerkelijk te kunnen gaan vertegenwoordigen.#politiek #tk2023

@djoerd Maybe some kind of open letter to those in power? That would at least send a signal that there are people who have serious concerns with this shift to outsource vital infrastructure to big-tech parties and undermine the pillars of a decentralised internet doing so..

@djoerd We have the same problem at the KNAW, I wouldn't be surprised if more universities and research institutes fell prey to Microsoft. It might perhaps make a stronger case to address it jointly over multiple institutes?

@cnx @djoerd Thanks, but a global scale might be overstretching things I fear, we'd need enormous international momentum to make a dent I suppose (would be great but maybe not so feasible). I'd already be happy if we manage to influence some decision makers in academia here in the Netherlands.

One of my projects in 2023 was to learn to play Simeon ten Holt's "Canto Ostinato" on the piano, a wonderfully repetitive (you either love or hate it) classical piece, often performed on multiple instruments. @cnx Thanks! Go for it! Learning piano is definitely a worthwhile skill to have. I do have the local originals of all the videos fortunately. I confess uploading this one to YouTube, after so many years, already felt rather icky :) I was contemplating setting up a PeerTube instance or something in case YouTube inevitably goes deeper into the enshittification process.

My old e-reader had some problems and needed to be replaced. I ended up exploring the hell that is DRM (copy protection) on e-books and tried to break the restraints so I can read my own legally acquired books with FOSS software. @handle Thanks. Interesting, I'll have to give that a read! I agree there is a lot that needs to be fixed regarding copyright law and intellectual property (especially patent law) in general, as it all has gone way too far in serving the primarily the financial interests of big producers/publishers and inhibiting proper competition and creativity (remix culture should be promoted).

@cnx A standalone CLI tool is more appealing to me than integration into Calibre. I like my software to do one thing only and to do it well ;) I'm generally skeptical of GUIs.I'll have to experiment with libgourou and perhaps update my post so others can benefit too.

I released new versions of my tooling around STAM (Standoff Text Annotation Model), a data model for working with (radical) stand-off annotation on text, with a practical set of tooling (Rust library, Python library, CLI tools) for working with such data. New is a tool to convert XML like TEI to plain text and stand-off annotation, which effectively 'untangles' a raw text and its annotations. Also new is improved HTML visualisation.
