I was reading many questions from people who are new here. I would love to answer, but unable to do so now. As someome who have been active here for sometime I will share my experience and explain some terminologies which will help people understand how this whole Fediverse works. I will start tonight around 9pm.

Ah. Finally back to home from work. What to do? I am a Code coolie, in other words a person who writes code for wages.I am not a smartphone type person, but out of excitement somehow I managed to reply and write posts from my phone today here in #Fediverse. So here I am in front of my computer, sitting comfortably to write posts to explain some terminologies and share my fediverse experience for a while.Follow the thread. #FediverseAMA

I see most of you have your account on mastodon.social or mstdn.social instances. First lets look at what mastodon is?Mastodon, in first place is a software. Not just any software, but Free and Open Source Software. It means, the code for this software is readily available to everyone, so that anyone can get a copy of it and use it for their own purposes.People around the world took this code and installed it on servers and Tada, we have many websites running this software. mastodon.social, mstdn.social are just two such websites among hundreds of websites running mastodon. When I say the word instance it refers to a particular website that is running mastodon or similar software.Similar software? Yes. Mastodon is not alone. There are other such projects too. Like what I am using right here in connect.fshm.in is powered by a software called #Pleroma. Both are two different software but they both know how to talk to each other. Thanks to a common language (i.e protocol) called ActivityPub.This network of multiple instances able to talk to each other, therefore people on instances can talk to each other is what we call Fediverse, like a universe with so many planets, stars, black holes, etc.,

Like Mastodon (or) Pleroma, Twitter and Facebook is also a software. But the fundamental difference is that, both Facebook and Twitter are closed source software. i.e the code for Twitter/Facebook is not available to the general public like how Mastodon or Pleroma's code is available. This makes all the difference. Other than Twitter Inc. and Facebook Inc. no one can run another instance of Twitter or Facebook therefore we are at the mercy of those corporations. Their operating principles and policies change as they wish and we have no say in it.While the scene here in #fediverse is different. We have many instances and many admins. There is no single operating principle (or) policy that applies to all servers. Each server has it's own policy and it is up to the admin (or) moderators of those servers.

What's happening here at #Fediverse is the true network effect. There are no paid advertisements. People inviting other people to join the network that is built democratically from the bottom up and has the idea of federation built in.Without federation, we couldn't really challenge the hegemony of Facebook or Twitter, or Google or Youtube. It becomes very clear that the idea of #Federation is the key not only for digital platforms but social movements as well.Educate! Agitate! Organize! and Federate!

There is no introduction needed for PlayStore. But I would like to introduce an alternative app store for Android called as @fdroidorg This app store allows only Free and Open Source Android apps. You need to download f-droid from it’s website. Here are some of my app picks from the store.Blokada - this app runs in the background as a vpn client and blocks trackers and ads that irritate us all over. You may still see few ads in apps like Youtube because Google does an end-to-end encryption for serving ads. See next app to solve this.NewPipe - this is an alternative and a much better app for Youtube. You can download video or only the audio. You can subscribe to channels without Google or Youtube account. No ads. No tracking. A clean video experience. Video popup modes, etc.,Fedilab - I have already written about it. My goto app for accessing Fediverse.OsmAnd~ - Completely offline Map viewing and routing application. The data comes from @openstreetmap First time download of map is required. You can record your trips and export them as GPX file and share it with friends, add places to the map, contribute to OpenStreetMap like Wikipedia, etc.,CityZen - another OpenStreetMap based app for exploring various avenues in a city.StreetComplete - Like a game, it shows you what information is missing in a particular road or street in OpenStreetMap, so you can start contributing to OSM in a more fun way. With OSMGeoWeek around the corner, it’s good time to start. Note: OpenStreetMap is a map that is built by people’s participation like how people write in Wikipedia. All data that goes into OpenStreetMap is available under a #OpenData license which means we are free to reuse the data for our purposes unlike Google Maps, where google completely own all the data that goes into it and charges for it.@thej should be able to explain more about #OpenData

As I have already mentioned, Mastodon isn't the only software that is part of #Fediverse. By now the co-creator of Mastodon, @Gargron has already become popular among Indians who came here from TwitterNow, I would like to introduce @kaniini to new comers from #India. She is the co-creator of another lightweight software that we use in connect.fshm.in and fsmi.social called #PleromaLet's put together our toots (or) posts for her as well.#India #Pleroma #Fediverse

@me @kaniini Super. Don’t worry we will help you get it done. There is a guide already written on setting up Pleroma on Raspberry Pi but it covers only the installation and configuration part of #Pleroma and skips other details of DNS, DDNS, Port forwarding, etc.,I can help you out on those. I used to run some services from Orange Pi (which is another kind of Raspberry Pi) connected to my Wifi router placed in my home shelf. Though there are limitations with self-hosting this way, it provides you the ultimate control than hosting on the cloud. If it is going to be your personal setup, you can use the above method. If not, you have to choose a cloud hosting provider like how we host connect.fshm.in via Digital Ocean for monthly 5$ and install #Pleroma in it.Things you will need.A domain name has to be purchased (i.e what would be the name of your site).Credit/Debit card or any other payment options that the cloud hosting solution provides.A hosting provider (Linode or Digital Ocean or any other recommended providers).

We should get rid of labelling FOSS licences as Permissive and Non-Permissive. Instead we should start using the labels Protective and Non-Protective licenses to mean Copyleft licenses that protects our freedom and open source licenses that doesn't protect our freedom. We should stop using their vocabulary and start using ours. #FreeSoftware #FOSS #Hegemony
