@joeyhFrom the thread it's not really "killing" moreso than just throwing up roadblocks by changing security measures but that's still annoying af.Especially cause it might fuck with commandline installing tools which blows

@xj9I'm specifically referring to the fact that FOSS doesn't want to organize within the workplace. If we had unions focused on turning Google, Microsoft, etc's code into open code or contributing back to it, then we don't need some fringe alternative that will just get sucked up by the most economically powerful because the default will BE free software. However that's not to say there aren't other ways to contribute.@mike @wohali

@xj9 @mike @wohaliBut as long as the behemoths stand powerful and capital is dominant to labor, all of our projects will forever be under threat of being co-opted

@xj9Everything can be countered. Measures that work now can be countered later, that's why organizing has to be dynamic and long term.@mike @wohali

With the influx of new folks from India (hi, welcome!) I'm curious if there's anything being done to build the social infrastructure of the fedi? Like we have plenty of folks working on the tech (masto, pleroma, pixelfed, etc) but how have people built strong and healthy communities here? How are people getting connected?I get that by nature of the platform it's mostly decentralized efforts, but I wonder if we could benefit from some level of organized coordination.

@tyrDo you think it could be helpful to expand that work into a collective effort? At a certain point i'm sure running that by yourself is probably a bit of work.I'd be interested to here what people who are involved in running mastodon instances and building these communities/infrastructure have to say about getting better organized.I could see this benefiting both the infrastructure side of things and onboarding new comers so it's less of a mysterious platform.

@tyrThat and ideally we could build ways to get connected. Like there's a profile directory but what if mastodon/the fedi had like some sort of buddy system people could use to connect with folks in a controlled yet random way?Like there could be fedi parties or something, IRL and online, I dunno just spitballing here about what this project could be.Otherwise I worry without developing the social stuff we'll be unable to maintain the fedi.

The contradiction between "break up [big thing]" because capitalism's monopolistic tendencies make life hell/gives [company] too much power and "fuck no I won't pay for 8 different streaming services" exposes that the problem isn't centralization vs decentralization.Because people want a centralized source for certain things and in fact centralization can provide key benefits for certain things. The problem is if it's centralized in a way that's undemocratic and exploitative

Like we could have a centralized public library system that lets folks download stuff to their own computers with torrents that could combine centralization and decentralization in resilient and democratic ways that don't have people recreating the TV model just to get art.
