If the Twitter rate limit really is due to excessive scraping (and I'm skeptical it is) then that's a direct result of eliminating (reasonable) API access. There's an analogy here with media piracy. Most users are happy to pay a reasonable price to watch TV shows/movies legally. Early on, Netflix provided a product that was reasonably priced, convenient and had a great selection. Piracy of TV shows/movies on BitTorrent and other platforms plummeted. /2

In recent years, the fragmentation of media streaming services has meant it's no longer convenient and libraries keep shrinking. Rising price means it's no longer cheap. Not unsurprisingly, we're seeing a surge in piracy again. /3

To be successful in (social) media, you need to build a product that people WANT to use because it's convenient, reasonably priced and works well. ENCOURAGE openness and creative use! Locking down your product by creating barriers and limitations to its use at the same time as raising the price will backfire, as it is here with Twitter. /4
