       Interesting discussion over at #Wiktionary today over how to define the word "problematic". Until a few years ago, Wiktionary included three definitions of the word:1. Posing a problem; having or suffering from problem(s):  a. Difficult to overcome, solve, or decide.  b. Not settled, uncertain, of uncertain outcome; debatable, questionable, open to doubt. In 2015, a user added this fourth one:  c. Contributing (usually implicitly or subtly) to systemic discrimination (such as racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia).I think I know the use of the word they had in mind -- but is it evidence that the meaning of the word is changing?

But like one Wiktionary user argued, people pick up an apple and use the expression "piece of fruit" -- does that mean "apple" is a definition of the word "fruit"?Words can become narrower in meaning, or broader. But is that what's happening here? Or is this just a more ordinary case of subsuming something particular under a general concept? How could we decide?
