@bkam I've spent some time recently with that idea. Things that I've noticed.- mastery requires a great deal of time, persistence, and a certain talent (which doesn't have to be that much)- structured & systematic understanding of how to improve, both at the mundane and at the step function improvements.it is a common American belief that life should be balanced (implication: mediocrity in all things). I deeply question that. There's no *point*.

@bkam You can't become a virtuoso by practicing scales. You have to make a shift to reading music. You have to reorder your stance. You have to know the repertoire. You have to spend the time so that the instrument and you have become and one and separated again. And more, of course.all of these are are different aspects to becoming a master musician. You have to understand why these things matter before you can practice them.it's worth looking into the ways of Zen re mastery and life.

imagine not spending time playing video games with others but instead volunteering, organizing, doing activism.

@Shamar I don't believe in the idea of critical thinking. It's too vague of a concept and thrown around by people who simply want others to believe as they themselves do.but insofar as it means philosophy: no, hackers shouldn't be doing that primarily unless they have educated deeply in philosophy. they should be doing and teaching the understandings they have.

curious if anyone has a link to a decent write up on the major differences between modern Left thought and Marxism-Leninism as practiced in the USSR (I'd also be interested in comparisons with other socialisms as well)

@philip left is very heterogenous. That's why I said socialisms.I'd like to learn more about the specifics of what the differences really were, and I just don't have the desire to trudge through tens of thousands of pages of writings to write my own summary of the differing tendencies in leftism.

@philip and actions are recorded with words, rendering the entire argument moot.now, do you have a suggestion for me of a survey of the different socialisms, with a special focus on comparing and constrasting marxism-leninism vs the others?

@Bones_and_Feathers that's not actually true. "Pink and Blue" by Jo Paoletti records the timeframe *quite* differently, placing gendered clothing as becoming popular in the 1880s, and dresses being gotten rid of very fast by most people once the onsie design came into fashion (much more practical).

@dickmandrake @Bones_and_Feathers Yes, pink and blue used to be assigned flipped from what they are now. Not sure when. My guess would be earlier, back in the ~1900 timeframe. I could check P&B book if you want. I would hesitate to tightly assign blame here to capitalism, frankly. Modernity has produced an enormous number of changes, including how gender is interacted with. That anxiety produced reactionary desire to lock gender down. Economic systems intersect but do not dominate all.

@dickmandrake @Bones_and_Feathers checked p&b: "it's complicated". The major transition occurred between 1920 and 1950s, the hard color coding as pink=girls is a 1980s late 2nd wave feminism thing according to Paoletti.

I’m reminded of what happened in the 1970s when the hippies — bruised and bloodied from the culture wars of the ‘60s — retreated into self-help, wellness, and personal development, as Adam Curtis documents in his series The Century of Self. While they turned inward, the winners of the ‘60s culture wars took society’s reins. A focus on personal wellness created an unintended side effect: a retreat from the public arena, and a shift in the distribution of power ever since.https://onezero.medium.com/the-dark-forest-theory-of-the-internet-7dc3e68a7cb1

Reading through Susannah Heschel's Aryan Jesus- it's about the efforts of Nazis to Nazify the Protestant church in the Third Reich. This topic is, to date, the hardest thing I've ever studied, in terms of personal horror of the subject.

@hcs it's sort of a nasty nationalist article to be honest.Consultants in general have these sorts of issues; outsourcing makes it worse, language/cultural barriers make it even worse. If Boeing had chosen to have a site in India, moved their lead engineers there, and paid top flight/benefits- no outsourcing, no consultants, shared language- then the issues would largely not exist outside of the usual management pressure to cut costs and timelines.

I'm catching up on my reading right now.https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/07/work-peak-professional-decline/590650/The author essays a few thoughts about professional decline. This is something that is on my mind: I'm in my mid-30s as a software engineer, at a "reasonably senior" position. Where do I go from here? What challenges can I seek? Do I see myself doing this at 55?etc.

General offer to *everyone*:I love getting email - paul@nathan.houseIt's like Mastodon, but far less ephemeral. ;-)I like talking Theology, being a Progressive Pentacostal Christian. I also like talking Computer Science (databases and SRE topics in particular)I also particularly appreciate talking history, with an interest in the volkisch thought. And if you have a college thesis - I love reading them!!Finally! Happy to read resumes of software engineers & line managers for review
