@foone Also so many professional programmers are arrogant gate keepers.

@aral I think the deeper understanding of the communication gulf is important. This pattern pops up continuously when there is communication between left and right.I'm not saying you need to communicate to have a conviction. BUT, when you do want to communicate it is good to know that there is basically a language barrier. Maybe more like a rhetoric barrier. One example is when you don't stand for anything "gotchas" are meaningless.

@veer66 @galdor I always liked golang's deliberate and explicit error handling.I use this helper library so I can gather errors as I go, but only care about any one of them failing.I haven't used golang much since the new error wrapping happened so I don't know it it's still idiomatic.https://codeberg.org/pkw/any/src/branch/main/any.go

@Wolven I am a deep unix serious business user, and I 100% agree. It is not helping to to just tell people to use linux. It is basically shifting blame and shaming people.

Wow I'm triggered.I just went to lobste.rs and remembered why i stopped going. It's an echo chamber.Someone posted an article about how they not only dislike strlcpy but feel confident to dismiss it's utility for everyone else too.And it's just a re-hash of ulrich prepper's position so it's not like it's new information.Lots of programmers are like this and i don't love it. This weird combination of casually but also authoritatively dismissive.

I have been ruminating a lot on the "status quo". I don't like status quo thinking at all,but for personal reasons. This was my shower thought. The brutality of the status quo really comes out from top down authority structures. Top down implies the reaction to change speed is very slow.So people in power are pretty isolated and they push a status quo agenda.People on the ground are subjected to it where real life happens and they deal with all the ways it is oppressive.I'm struggling

to express what i mean.Like a little bit of status quo in a bottom up / anarchist society wouldn't necessarily be bad, because...The people formulating the status quo are also the ones living with it's implications. So if something needs to change it can. When the authority of what is status quo is kept at the top, then those formulating it won't know it's real world implications. In a simplified sense it's why we have to protest to change things.

All of my anecdotal experience with infosec is them taking away agency from people that understand things more than they do. (this is years of experience)I have yet to experience it as anything but job security for the infosec people.Back when systems administrators were ubiquitous, my anecdotal experience with them was the opposite.#unix

@Ricardus Yes! I'm stoked that Harris might beat Trump, but I'm not gonna start being all unquestionably supportive of Democrats now. That would be foolish.

@ErikUden I like the rhetorical angle of this question. One reason for me is to engage with people before they are ready. I noticed this about scifi. The Expanse, Dune, Deep Space Nine ...These stories seem so obviously placeholders for contemporary things. It's like softening people up before you lift veil. "Fremen are Muslims" (Also regardless of to what extent the author intended it, maybe even they weren't ready to lift the veil themselves.)

@SocialGaff I'm adding this provider to my list of options. I appreciate they advertise no advertising, and at some eco consideration.I really want to run my own mail server again, but i don't think I have the cognitive capacity or free time like I used to as a younger person 😋 (so many fiddly configs ...)

@mhoye This is a good idea. This is the kind of thing a high profile case could win. Not easily or trivially, but they could win. Once technical people start witnessing in court about how LLMs work it's just too clearly inappropriate that they be used at all for anything subjective like this.Like it would need money and pro-bono lawyers and all that.
