Ive been using the Opera browser since 1998. About 5 years ago I was mildly alarmed by it being bought by a Chinese company. I was a lot more alarmed that suddenly every good dev/devrel left, like @brucelawson and @mathias.I've still been using it as my "trash browser", for casual surfing.I wonder if I should retire it for that too. Has anybody seen any spying or data harvesting from Opera?

I'm probably missing something obvious and should RTFM, but how to set row heights on implicit CSS grid rows?So not:.container { grid-template-rows: 1fr auto;}But something like:.child1 { /* make this one 1fr */}.child2 { /* make this one auto */}My brain nor google-fu is of any use to me today. Halp!

@pjbrunet I'd like to see that contest! But I won't be betting my money on floats or tables ;-)

@pjbrunet Hey, if you need to support 30 year old browsers, go tables! I've built sites in the tables era, then in the float era, and still today—so I see the immense advantages of flexbox and grid. No doubt you could build some layouts in tables too, even hack the page's HTML to be semantically okay-ish by jumping through weird aria/role hoops, if you're willing to sacrifice responsiveness... but that ain't my party!

@pjbrunet Indeed, but responsive because webpages were documents. Now they're documents or apps with complex layouts. There have been really good and concise videos and articles on the benefits of flexbox and grid (like this 5 minute intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs3piaN4b5I), I hope you find the time to dive in. Flexbox and grid isn't a hype, they're made to address all the shortcomings of floats and tables, not to replace them!

(O_o)I knew this "ASCII emoji" has been around for a long time, but never guessed it was already dreamt up of in 1970!"Samurai on the toilet" by Takeshi Kitanohttps://text-mode.org/?p=9318

@historyofpunkrock Ramones - RamonesDead Kennedys - Fresh Fruitbecause I'v been listening to them for over 30 years. AndX-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescentsbecause I only discovered that album 3 years ago despite the band having been in my peripheral for over 30 years. Dismissed it then because it looked soft and poppy but the joke's on me -- it's an absolute banger and I am still making up for lost listening-time.

Fonts and "fair use", are there examples of that?I mean the way where showing a very short clip of a movie in your own video is accepted as "fair use", while including 20 minutes of that same movie is not.Would I be able to, say, create a "Recognize The Ampsersand" game by _somehow_ gathering the ampersands of all digitally available fonts?

This 5.25" floppy disk was stored in an uninsulated attic for the past 25 years, where the weight of the other disks made it bend over the diskbox edge.It loaded with zero errors!OId tech is awesome! 💖#retrogaming #retrocomputing #commodore

For me it's this one. I found it at a book market as a teen and was the first "official" account I saw in print about a world I just started dabbling in. Read it many times! (The Chaos Computer Book)

Every once a while I think about this clip of John James, an early hacker/artist, making paintings with his computer in 1970.Who was he?What else has he built?Where did the paintings go?#art #painting #retrocomputing

@historyofpunkrock As a kid I was mostly into metal. I couldn't put my finger on it then, but I grew tired of the long songs and complex musicianship in 90s metal. Then Lemmy mentioned the Ramones on MTV. Rode my bike to the record store, bought Ramones' "All the stuff and more" unseen.Inserted CD, pressed play. The songs *just started*. No build-up but immediate adrenaline. All posing removed. Weird, fast, simple. Abrupt stop, abrupt start. "I could do this!" Holy shit. This is *it*.
