Been taking it easy on Fedi for a while now, got something reposted into the timeline, from an account on a server not usually known for hosting sensible opinions, that was a take I could co-sign on (feminists please get over men-are-pigs as a baseline for community-building). For a minute, I was like: Wow, have things changed to much while I wasn't paying attention?I click through to the account, scroll down a single page, find an unironic "Pleroma is the Nazi Fedi-software" post and myself reassured: No, the schizo-level is where it always was (and keeps rising at a predictable rate).

To all my fellow grinch-like peeps on the timeline: If you're like me and you- don't care for conifers inside your home- don't care about giving / receiving presents at the traditionally appointed date- don't care for hanging with the family because your family is shit and hanging with them is torture- don't care for sermons about baby Jesus- don't care for green-red-white themed tacky decorations inside and outside your homeRelax and chill with the comforting knowledge that you're not alone and you're ... huh, here we go ... *clears throat*, *stage whispers* VALID AS FUCK.If you're getting time off, enjoy the long weekend. Maybe I'll see some of you on Saturday at the supermarket, shopping for post-xmas-discounted baked goods and cookies.

Just realized that I haven't tried wake on lan on my latest computer yet and, incredibly, for the first time in like 20 years, I actually apparently managed to get a computer where wake on lan actually works

Unlocked some more useful power plan settings in Windows. I'm making that gaming box energy efficient when I'm just using a webbrowser yet.Bumping up the processor load threshold for raising clock speed makes a huge difference.

If "the process" is so valuable (ref. "Using ML tools to enhance productivity skips over inherently valuable processes), why not put that to the test and start offering process on the free market rather than, as is the tradition, keeping under wraps as secret sauce, closed source, trade secrets, patented technology, intellectual property, etc., etc., and only offering product.Access to ML tools keeps underperforming relative to expectations as far as paying customers are concerned. If you're sitting on valuable processes, maybe now it's time to put a price tag on it, especially if you can deliver that process into the hands (or brains) of customers right now, while data centers for ML applications remain mostly speculative assets at this point.

Got my deep discounted Christmas sweets at the shopping run early this morning, as planned. That's afternoon tea sorted until February, probably.

Looking out the window at the embers of a mid-winter evening sky, sun already beyond the horizon, playing Chicane's "Low Sun" and dreaming of the beach.

Trying to compile something on Windows and the labyrinth of dependencies on legacy stuff is incredible. Sorry m8, gotta have that six year old tool-chain.

@futurebird @futurebird Not to be a peddler of black pills here, but the concepts of sycophancy, yes-people, insincerity, manipulative behavior, etc. etc. of course all predate LLM-based chat-bots.There is a deeper abyss waiting behind the rather shallow one (the danger of mistaking a chatbot for a person (or a distinct entity at all)), and that is taking this experiment that you can actually conduct (A/B-testing two instances of the same chat-bot with different inputs) to a thought experiment of being able to do the same experiment with actual people and drawing extreme conclusions from it.

There's quite nothing like looking up (recent) cover versions of Pet Shop Boys songs to remind you that pop music is dead.

Due to being affected on one of my computers I recently learned that Intel's stellar work in both the field of soft-TPMs (Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT) and Linux's TPM support has lead over tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of computers out there no longer being able to reliably power down or enter standy (because the TPM code hangs in a very late stage of the shutdown / suspension). And nobody talks about it. Tech press? Linux vendors? Intel? Radio silence. Very late victory for the Trusted Computing Group cronies, congratulations. Free software getting pwn'd by zombies from the 00s.

Tfw u try to use the huggingface command line tools to download stuff because surely that has got to be less annoying than using a download manager and find out they're worse than useless.
