@killyourfm @system76 I just ordered the new ThinkPad T14s with AMD Ryzen 6850U for work. It is small enough, with a full day battery life, super quiet and fast. You can even order it with Ubuntu pre-installed and everything should work very well with Linux.Review: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T14s-G3-AMD-laptop-review-Quiet-and-efficient-workhorse-with-Ryzen-power.682906.0.htmlLinux benchmarks with the smaller X13 version: https://www.phoronix.com/review/amd-ryzen7-6850uLinux benchmarks vs. Apple M2: https://www.phoronix.com/review/apple-m2-amd-ryzen

@sogga @mario Um... The Berlin supermarkets are claustrophobic and stressful. You also rarely find what you need if needing to cook something more special, not common in German cuisine. And there is no space to move and no space at all to pack after you paid, with a very demanding person right after you already pushing their stuff through.

I’ve been using my new work laptop, the mighty Lenovo #ThinkPad T14s G3 with AMD Ryzen 6850U almost a month now. I was a bit afraid how well such a new laptop works with #Linux, and how much of an upgrade (or downgrade) it is from my previous laptop, the X1 Carbon.I ordered mine with #Ubuntu preinstalled, because I want to be part of their statistics and put some of the money where my mouth is. When opening the laptop for the first time, it really felt like I’m in the future when I see a pre-installed Linux distribution starting up and working perfectly in a premium laptop. After booting to Ubuntu, it was time to install my preferred operating system #NixOS. A few snippets that might be useful for others considering this laptop:Make sure to use the most recent kernel (as of today, 6.3)Enable the new amd-pstate kernel module for power handling. If using sway, I like the display scaled up a bit and the panel supports AMD FreeSync with variable bitrate, which should be enabled for sway.To make the internal speakers sound better, get the IRS sound profile from Windows, the EasyEffects profile and enable EasyEffects together with PipeWireRight now, everything in this laptop just works on Linux. I can use the fingerprint reader with sudo, the CPU has enough oomph for Rust compilation and the battery lasts the whole day with the amd-pstate module (comparable, or a bit better than Apple’s M2). Waking up from sleep works as it should. The keyboard is not as good as it used to be, but it’s still quite nice. The touchpad can still be disabled from the BIOS, and the TrackPoint has three real mouse buttons as always.

First day when it’s over 25 degrees outside. Should I go out, or play #Zelda the whole day at home?

@killyourfm Depends on the album. For example this one is never really gone to the red end, and even when the latest remaster is one point down compared to the vinyl, it sounds absolutely amazing from a SACD.https://dr.loudness-war.info/?artist=Steely+dan&album=Can%27t+buy+a+thrill

@albituga_ @killyourfm I beg to differ. I have some SACD masters that sound better than anything. Also good old reel-to-reel tape beats any vinyl due to the better dynamics and missing the crackles.

So here I am, a seasoned #Rust developer, starting to learn #programming with #TypeScript a few months ago. Today’s the day when my first TypeScript library is released. It’s definitely a weird language. You have the wild west of #JavaScript, a language designed in a few weeks back in the 90’s, which is now the most popular language in the world. On top of it, some very smart people designed a type system that most of the time is helpful and gives quite cool tooling for building things that (hopefully) do not break all the time. Rarely people talk about what you really can do with the type system. For example, defining a function where the input type can define the fields of the output type, this is something you cannot do in Rust, but is quite possible with TypeScript. My next project goes even further to the depths of TypeScript. The sad part is that all these crazy things you can do with the types, people don’t really talk about it as they do about React or the latest frontend framework. They are minimally documented, and you just have to read the sources of open libraries to understand their usage. It’s very overwhelming. And documentation seems to be for the losers, which differs a lot from what I’m used to with Rust.

@icedquinn Yeah, and you build this extremely advanced type system on top of it. It’s still the same language, with some extensions, but still the same weird quickly defined language is what fuels the whole ecosystem. With TypeScript, you can define types in a way that will not be that readable for anybody else after a while, or for yourself if I’m completely honest:export type BlogCollectionFetchPayload< S extends BlogConnectionSelect | null | undefined> = S extends BlogConnectionSelect ? BlogConnectionFetchPayload<S> | null : never// Payload to return a subset of fields of a user.export type UserFetchPayload<S extends UserSelect | null | undefined> = S extends UserSelect ? { [P in TruthyKeys<S>]: P extends 'blogs' ? BlogCollectionFetchPayload<S[P]> | null : P extends 'address' ? AddressFetchPayload<S[P]> | null : P extends keyof UserNode ? UserNode[P] : never } : never

@icedquinn I think right now the most interesting idea is the comptime in Zig. I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks like you can just write normal imperative Zig to define for example, that the int parameter for your function must be more than zero…

This week in #Finland: the police arrests men who’ve been printing assault rifles and storing thousands of bullets in their place. They have evidence of these men planning to kill a few politicians and making a #terrorist strike in Finland. The interior minister has not said anything on the case: the men are from a far right movement and one of them used to be part of her party’s youth organization. The interior minister was talking today about how they are making it harder for foreigners to move to Finland.#nazis

@remi if you run your own instance for a few friends, #akkoma wins. Just install a reasonable setup once and let it run in the small Hetzner instance until there’s a new release every few months. Lightweight and fast, the devs are great.
