I'm looking for a job in software development — pls boost! 🙏About me: I'm a US-based software developer with about a decade of experience in the industry (mid-90s to mid-aughts), but for the last 15 years I've been in academia (PhD in theoretical linguistics from MIT in 2011, tenured Associate Prof at the U of Maryland since 2017). This past spring, I decided to leave academia, and move back into the tech sphere. Though my academic field was linguistics, it was of the rather abstract, armchair variety – and so I'm not necessarily looking for anything language-related in the tech world. (Though that would be fine too, of course!)I'm versed in Python, Go, Java, Rust, C, and C++, and have basic familiarity with several other programming languages. I know my way around the sysadmin side of things (you know: writing this now from a glitch-soc flavored Mastodon server that I run off a linux vm, that sort of thing). I even know a good bit about processor design, from working at Intel for a bit back in the day.I'm good at adapting to new challenges and I ramp up on new knowledge very quickly, but because of my non-orthodox résumé (see: last 15 years in academia), it's not easy to find posted job ads for which I'm the ideal on-paper candidate. our local dog park has a pond in the middle of it. in the summer (and well into the fall), our younger dog Alfie loves to frolic in the water. but it’s starting to freeze over now, so the parks department here has gone ahead & fenced it in, so no dogs get hurt. I love that :blobfoxheartcute:

check this out: we spent the holiday in Illinois with my wife’s family. whenever we have a long drive like this, we break it into a couple of parts, stopping at a random spot on the way. regardless of where we are, when we feel we've had enough driving for the day, we just pull out our phones & look for a hotel nearby. this time around, we happened to end up in a brand new hotel right across the street from the John Glenn NASA Research Center, whose entire interior decor is a throwback to the late 60s / early 70s NASA heyday. look at these rotary phones!!! 😍
