Working theory: it's bait. They know I am now sorely tempted to write something negative about their client, so I can use the images in context of which they don't approve, in the hope that they'll sue for copyright infringement, and then we can precedent the hell out of them in court.Definitely wouldn't touch their client on any other basis. If they're all "as long as they're talking about him" on this, it all makes sense.Must be. It is the only way it could possibly make sense

@wogan I'd show you, but that would be giving them what they want.Time to roll out the alt text.Dude you've never heard of, moodily lit, looking at the camera in a fashion I'm pretty sure someone in the shoot described, overly ambitiously, as "smouldering".I find the level of personal grooming on display in the images quite intimidating, but they are otherwise uninspiring.

Today in #tenders: 60x electrical multiplugs for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (#PRASA).Total expected cost: call it 0.0012% of PRASA's annual spending.Someone went to the website for the retail chain Builders, did a copy-and-paste of the exact product they need, from just below the brand name, and plonked that in a 24-page RFQ.

@wogan It'll take us a couple of years of information requests and resulting legal action to be sure. But my back-of-envelope calculations say just the salary cost of the people adjudicating will exceed the contract cost, yes – assuming they are quite fast and efficient. And if someone challenges the tender – which they could do, for free, using the Small Claim Court – then it gets real expensive real fast.

@textfiles Thanks for sharing. Makes it less painful when a pro does it too.

Really, Oxford? You and I have spent many nights in vigorous thesaurusing, and I have few complaints about your performance. But I dunno this time, hey. "#Lekker" could easily be used for "tipsy", and even "buzzed", but drunk? Which is, by our own definition, "affected by alcohol to the extent of losing control of one's faculties or behaviour"?Maybe as euphemism, but not seriously, no.This may call for a sternly-worded letter.#SouthAfrica #Afrikaans #dictionary

I could spend 15 minutes brute-forcing out of the #Wordle hole I've dug for myself.Or I could spend the whole day pondering the moral and ethical implications of using #ChatGPT to solve it.Welp, time to cancel some meetings.

Hang on hang on hang on. Why am I doing the heavy lifting, when there is a perfectly capable robot servant to do my thinking for me?

Going to need a human in the loop here, though, GPT sucks at making any kind of decision.UpWork, maybe? Always many under-employed liberal arts types hanging out there. But they'll want, like, $5 to cover transaction costs.

(a) #ChatGPT tries to brute-force a #Wordle problem – and likes showing its work. Which is poor. (b) I was 6 prompts deep before I convinced it to solve for X123X, rather than treating the final X as a variable.(c) It refused to be limited to supplied valid letters, yet ran through three dozen possible words before it found a single valid one. But we finally got there.Wordle 746 5/6⬜🟩⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨⬜🟨⬜⬜🟩🟩🟩⬜⬜🟩🟩🟩⬜🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

The surprise here is just how poor ChatGPT – a powerful language engine routinely used to solve programming problems – is at Wordle. I really wasn't expecting to have to re-engineer the prompt several times, not with three greens on the board.

@malmorrow @wogan Aaahhhh, but is counting not a function of language, an expression of meaning through words, more than it is arithmetical, given that it lacks (all but the simplest) operation?*taps imaginary philosopher's pipe against teeth; goes off to ask ChatGPT*

@retr0id Sooooooo you propose...some sort of camera system? Maybe laser rangefinding?I foresee some trouble getting buy-in from your primary users.

@taylorlorenz It's never been tested - and probably won't be, Twitter would have to lodge a complaint. But under South African media regulations we are required to attempt to contact the company through its chosen formal mechanism, and to report its response.Even if it is automated, even if we know it is trolling, the rules in place to protect not-crazy subjects of reporting still apply.

@wogan @taylorlorenz It's an almost zero-cost, no-risk way to force an apology. Best way to undermine a story. If they're really lucky the publication digs in its heels, and then it becomes a whole messy fight that comes to obscure the original report entirely.

@simon If the "cracker" side of the hacker/cracker wars had only taken such a stance in, say, 1998, much suffering could have been prevented.
