An example of typing with 10 fingers, 2 index fingers and 2 thumbs while holding the device. I’m currently working on a review and a documentation regarding the PPKB that will be linked here soon.

@techsaviours@fosstodon.org That’s actually very easy thanks to my mirrored layouts at https://codeberg.org/phalio/ppkb-layouts#user-content-mirrored that add another shift, Fn, ctrl and alt for the right thumb. You can even see me typing a ! with right shift at 1:01 in this video. It’s great!

Let me tell you the grand tale of Riolu and Chimchar from Team Fire.⬇ Dᴏᴡɴʟᴏᴀᴅshttps://phal.io/rezawrces/musicVery creative team name, I know. Back then, I couldn’t think of a better name and wanted to continue playing. PMD2 Sky is one of my most favourite games and so is the soundtrack. I’m very thankful that I was given the opportunity to experience this wonderful game as a child and to this day I get very emotional when I listen to the soundtrack or even see scenes of the game. That’s quite useful actually, whenever I have something in my eye I can just listen to some especially emotional or sad songs and it will be removed in no time.[…] (Continue reading at https://phal.io/rezawrces/tmp/explorationteamtheme.html)👆 LɪɴᴋsWebsite: https://phal.ioPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/phalioKo-fi: https://ko-fi.com/phalioYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFLp8Is-lEMpQvhoY95Gorg/YouTube2: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6OogQGNdNLLRix0TR0Ke_ATwitter: https://twitter.com/PhalioDiscord server: https://phal.io/discordSoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phalioTumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/phalio7Twitch (German): https://www.twitch.tv/phalio_Mastodon: https://mstdn.social/@PhalioI’m on almost every site because I don’t want to exclude anyone, find out if I’m using the site you’re using here: https://phal.io/links🕒 Exᴘᴇɴᴅɪᴛᴜʀᴇ ᴏꜰ ᴛɪᴍᴇ61 hours totalSong: 25 hoursDrawing: 23.5 hoursEditing: 10 hoursPost-editing stuff: 2.5 hours💾 Pʀᴏɢʀᴀᴍᴍᴇs ᴜsᴇᴅVideo editing: DaVinvi Resolve https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/Pixel art: Aseprite https://www.aseprite.org/8-bit audio production: FamiTracker http://famitracker.com/Screen recording: OBS Studio https://obsproject.com/Video conversion: FFmpeg https://ffmpeg.org/🎵 Mᴜsɪᴄ ᴜsᴇᴅOriginal song: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky – Pokémon Exploration Team Theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjMymhZkUVk[8-Bit] The Legend of Zelda – Overworld Theme https://youtu.be/qc1RTNB6Rwc[8-Bit] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – Ilia’s Theme https://youtu.be/IWw9-V1yJtk#8bit

@leadore@toot.cafe It gets easier over time as one gets used to it but to be honest I still mistype a lot, especially with 10 fingers, it took quite a few attempts to get perfect recordings of me typing these sentences. And of course multiple mistake-free recordings were ruined by everything going wrong that could possibly go wrong: The phone screen’s brightness turned out to be too low in the recording, the camera’s battery ran out, the camera’s SD card became full, I accidentally moved the phone partly out of the camera’s view during handheld typing, a reflection of my face was visible on the phone’s screen, and possibly other things I’ve forgotten (see the jumps of the time displayed on the phone screen in the three scenes). But at least that got me some extra typing practice, and I was listening to the LoTR soundtrack and using my beloved Emacs, so it was time well spent.

@leadore@toot.cafe I use the default style, I personally never liked modal editing, I changed that in my Qutebrowser too.It works really well on the PPKB. In “laptop/lap mode” when all fingers can be used to type, key chords work just as well as they do on big keyboards for me. My fingers seem to have a good size for the tiny keys, but something like C-x C-c with the index and middle fingers next to each other on x and c could be an issue for people with bigger fingers and potentially take a little longer. It doesn’t work very comfortably by default in “handheld mode” with only thumbs since the left thumb with access to the left half of the keyboard can’t press multiple keys at once (unless they are right next to each other, M-x is a perfect candidate for that, as well as anything requiring Ctrl+Shift and the like). But I had the idea to solve that with custom keyboard layouts that add right versions of modifier keys for the right thumb https://codeberg.org/phalio/ppkb-layouts#user-content-mirrored. That’s of course a little slower compared to using more fingers just like handheld thumb-only typing in general, but it makes Emacs, terminals and general keyboard usage work fully and comfortably in handheld mode. I can just hold right Control with my right thumb and then type x c or anything with my left thumb. That of course also includes typing capital letters on the left half and other stuff. It’s great! Emacs on the go! I wonder how many other people check off their grocery list on their phone with C-c C-c in Emacs :blobcatthinkingsmirk:

@leadore@toot.cafe I guess that depends on what you need it to do, you could give me some more details or ask in the Matrix channel. I wouldn’t call the regular PinePhone a “really good smartphone”, both because the hardware is quite slow and because software for Linux phones still has a long way to go. With a few exceptions I can’t really comment on the state of “regular” Linux phone applications that are built for touchscreens and portrait orientation (although I hear that that’s already going quite well) because as you can see I use it basically like a normal computer with Sway, which is mostly made possible thanks to the keyboard and works very well. I use the terminal a lot which is perfect because it’s very fast no matter the slow hardware and I don’t have to worry about phone/distro/architecture compatibility. Hardware accelerated video playback works perfectly up to 720p30, although supposedly it should be capable of a lot more when not slowed down by display scaling and rotation. I also very rarely use regular phone calls and SMS but I had some issues in that area, as quite a few people have. But that was when I was still using the outdated first version of the proprietary modem firmware that the phone came with, I’ve since upgraded to the improved FOSS firmware and not made a call with it yet but receiving SMS and using mobile data seems to have been working without issues.I personally mostly use it for listening to music with cmus (mostly with Bluetooth earbuds), Emacsing in Emacs, watching local and online videos with mpv, reading ebooks with epy and browsing the web with Lynx, qutebrowser and Firefox, which all works very well.If everything you want to use it for already works good enough for you and you don’t mind waiting 12 seconds for a graphical web browser to start and heavier websites being laggy and occasionally troubleshooting something, the PinePhone can already be a really good “phone”. Otherwise, if that’s still within your price range, you could wait for the PinePhone Pro to be ready which is a lot faster and sounds more like it will eventually be a really good phone, and that would also leave some more time for the mobile Linux ecosystem as a whole to continue improving and “get there”.

This video shows the first time I tried this method and I believe the fourth time I put the phone into the keyboard case in general, so it’s not a perfect example as I lacked experience. I’ve done this many more times since then but I didn’t feel like recording another video. Interestingly the click while pressing down in the pin area seems to have disappeared, but the connection is still perfect and inserting the phone has become easy and fast. Also, you should probably do this over a table and not next to one in case you drop it.Read more at https://phal.io/tech/pinephone-keyboard#inserting-the-phone

Read more at https://phal.io/tech/pinephone-keyboard#keycaps-getting-stuckThis refers to keycaps not going down when pressing them. See https://phal.io/tech/pinephone-keyboard#keys-repeating-or-getting-stuck for when the keyboard keeps printing symbols or activating modifiers like shift after letting go of the corresponding key which is a fixable software issue.

Context: It was believed that using the phone’s USB port while the keyboard is attached would result in rather bad things but Megi disproved it here https://xnux.eu/log/#072 and now I was finally courageous enough to try it myself. Just make sure not to use both ports at once!

@Eninic@fosstodon.org Mine is from the first batch too. I’ve been using it a lot and it still works as well as it did when it arrived. They did make changes with later batches but the only change I know of is the top row issue being fixed.
