Haven’t interacted with a #Microsoft product in a long, long time, then my son got really into #Minecraft and I bought a Windows computer. So far I’ve found: Not only is internet required to install Windows, you also need a Microsoft account¹. The Switch, Xbox and PS4/PS5 versions of Minecraft can only connect to “featured” servers rather than custom servers.²Not a good track record for like… 1 week of interacting with their products.¹I realize that there’s some convoluted way to do this, but it definitely derailed me from doing the Windows install when I wanted to. Particularly since I’m just dual-booting Windows as a “just-in-case” type situation.²Luckily someone has hacked around this requirement, though who knows how long that can last.

Oh, also apparently you need a Microsoft account to connect to even custom Minecraft servers, and you need to pay for a Nintendo Online account AND have a Microsoft account to connect to Minecraft servers on the Switch.

Presumably the Microsoft account is to manage authentication so that you get the same character every time you connect (no matter what IP they come from), and so that the custom servers can manage permissions and access.Kinda fair, though also I imagine most people would be perfectly happy with each user generating a UUID and access being managed with an optional TOFU model where admins are asked when someone tries to join a server.

Ok, I am traveling to Spain soon, and when I travel I usually bring a bit of protein powder (I put it in cottage cheese or yogurt to add some flavor and texture).However, I suspect that my usual approach — Ziploc baggies in a freezer bag — might invite, uh… extra scrutiny… at customs (see photo).Anyone have alternative ideas about how to transport this stuff without creating suspicion? 7 year old has written a wish list for Christmas already. It includes "a non laggy PC", "a mouse (not the pet kind)" and "anything I imagine comes true and I can enable and disable it".My 4 year old has asked to stop aging and in fact he would like to be younger. Glad to be raising ambitious kids.

*Ahem* I hereby affirmatively state that the ONLY ergonomic way to functionally backport lazy imports would be to use a context manager. Even a *genius* could not come up with a better way.#python

I further contend that other than `contextlib.suppress`, there is no other situation where lazy imports in a context manager could be dangerous.

Though I will admit that there are also NO OTHER REASONS for putting lazy imports in a context manager. It's just the backwards compatibility use case and no others.

Just got hit by the thing where YouTube on mobile automatically dubs videos into the language your interface is in with no way to turn it off (WTF?!). The solution I found was to open the video in NewPipe and go to Settings > Video & Audio > Prefer original audio.🤦♂️

I have to say that unfortunately, since Mozilla took over K9 mail and turned it into Thunderbird for Android, it has really ruined the usability for me. Anyone have any recommendations for other #foss email clients? Bonus points if they can handle sending from catch-all email addresses.

We should make days roll over around 19:00 instead of midnight. It would complicate a lot of things about record keeping for the majority of the year, but at least we would be able to have a New Year's Party at a reasonable hour.
