@TedUnderwood I have a student who's trying to research this, and it has this schizoid dimension of: "no, no one is actually using this technology in any meaningful way, and no, no one's really suggesting they should. But they MIGHT do it, and so we need this research project where I demonstrate why that's a bad idea."

@heuser right, I think this is the trajectory. better text to speech, paired with better speech recognition and machine translation, would be a miracle in its own right for a lot of the world, and it's basically there in existing technology.

@TedUnderwood Looks like the hallucination problem is still unsolved, but it is cool —

@TedUnderwood although hang on, maybe this is still the normal ChatGPT.

@dotstdy @TedUnderwood In general I'm inclined to agree with you, but honestly at this point I think that's an empirical question. It's not going to get to correct answers the way we do, but I doubt this means it can't ever get there some other way.

ugh I spent my morning getting stressed about AI again, and had to reassure myself that universities move very slowly and our jobs will be the last to disappear.

@TedUnderwood I dunno. The skills the five-page undergraduate essay teaches have been professionally useless for awhile; I'm not sure this greater evidence of uselessness will change matters. Especially when the civics justification for the process (don't let an AI's summary affect your thinking about how to vote!) hasn't weakened much.

@bwyble @TedUnderwood I do think the author makes a sharp point in observing that a world where the AI is doing the writing and the grading will make the whole skill seem less worthwhile. It's just already at a very low point to begin with.
