PSA: use gloves when using gorilla glue. Tried to glue the sole on some shoes yesterday and this is my life now.

asking chatgpt why it won't generate insults etc for entertainment purposes, but will generate plausible sounding advice with absolutely no understanding of the subject matter or ability to link sources is a real reminder programming doesn't have any professional standards bodies.

Never get a ring doorbell. Not saying this for any privacy reason but the app takes so long to load 50% of the time your visitor has gone.

@dick_turpin The main thing it's intended to solve is my wife not being able to answer the door when she's in a call; but it's tremendously slow and you have to use one of about 3 pre-set quick-responses, which operate like an answerphone rather than a widget button.

rishi sunak backtracking on climate goals is frustrating for another reason because every time we're world leading in anything good the government nixes it.So for example, the atom was split for the first time in Britain and we had the first civil nuclear power in the world and had grand plans... until thatcher privatised power generation. And now we're pioneers at offshore wind; something genuinely brilliant that's paid off multiple times and we should absolutely just double down on and export everywhere. But no, let's just make policy like british auto manufacturers are serious businesses and the north sea is bottomless

@dick_turpin Whatever it is it's dumb because even without climate change, renewables are something we're in a great position to expand hugely. Let shell die. It's not like renewables won't need people with the engineers' experience.

my car's exhaust became loose on nye. it's in for its mot today. Excited to hear the bill.(It's estimated £165 to fix exhaust and do mot before any problems the mot unearths on my 19 year old mk1 toyota yaris)

@dick_turpin Either way it's in with a decent local garage so I don't think I'll be ripped off like when I made the mistake of using halfords last year

@dick_turpin for me the mot is £45 and he advised to do that. Basically a reasonable cost for 'checking everything on the car'

@dick_turpin the question is whether to repair it or scrap it so I think he's doing mot checks first, then asking if I'm willing to pay repairs

@dick_turpin It is a decent motor but it's 19 years old so this is already the long run

@dick_turpin tbh it's generally driven really nicely and is a great car practicality wise. Had to replace brake discs and some other stuff last year but part of this is it does the thing and whenever it dies my wife won't want to buy another car for £1.5k

@dick_turpin for me a car is a tool and I'd very much rather not have one at all, so spending 5 times as much on something 25% better to drive would irritate me.
