""Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people’s ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise.""-- Donald Horn

https://www.spaceconnectonline.com.au/launch/4516-rocketlab-launches-first-in-house-designed-built-photon-satellite'First Light’ paves the way for future, high-energy variations of Photon designed for lunar and interplanetary missions, including the CAPSTONE mission to the moon for NASA in early 2021.‘First Light’ was deployed to orbit on Rocket Lab’s 14th Electron mission, ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Optical’, which lifted-off from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand on 31 August 2020. Approximately 60 minutes after lift-off, Electron deployed a 100-kilogram microsatellite for Capella Space, an action that would typically signal the successful completion of a standard Rocket Lab mission.-- from : https://www.spaceconnectonline.com.au/ Sept 2020#RocketLab #SpaceFlight #Satellite #NASA #Luna #NZ #California

https://theconversation.com/research-reveals-shocking-detail-on-how-australias-environmental-scientists-are-being-silenced-140026... study, just published, shows how important scientific information about environmental threats often does not reach the public or decision-makers, including government ministers. In some cases, scientists self-censor information for fear of damaging their careers, losing funding or being misrepresented in the media. In others, senior managers or ministers’ officers prevented researchers from speaking truthfully on scientific matters. This information blackout, termed “science suppression”, can hide environmentally damaging practices and policies from public scrutiny. The practice is detrimental to both nature and democracy.

Big winds may blow the dinosaurs away...Not the pretty bunker on the Hill , the actual real humans in the ACT.Neoen will supply the ACT with 100MW of wind power from the first stage of its massive Goyder Renewables Zone in South Australia, along with a 50MW battery in the ACT. The price it bid is a record low for Australia wind projects.....Global Power Generation was the other successful bidder and will supply 100MW of wind power from the second stage of the Berrybank wind farm in Western Victoria, along with a 10MW/20MWh battery, also to be built in the national capital....[The ACT]it maintains its status as 100 per cent renewably powered as demand grows. The territory reached that milestone last year, with the last of a series of wind and solar farms, the third stage of the Hornsdale wind farm, coming online 12 months ago. This is an interesting development for many reasons, not only the "Big batteries" and deliverables at excellent price points but also for the methodology and world view that enables excellent results for relatively low levels of risk and expenditure.--Sept. 2020https://reneweconomy.com.au/#Renewables #WindPower #BigBattery #reverseAuction

@liamvhogan There is (also) *merit* in having appropriate organisational level cultural knowledge. The two paradigms are not exclusive. The stolen, even *colonised*, capacity of the People of the Public Service to propagate a "traditional culture" of objective social service is perhaps the Queen Termite in the footings here. After all one of the Neolib "Conseravative Warrior's" primary tactical objectives is clearly , distinctively, loudly, negatively, labeling the "other". um sorry I digressed what observation there was right away.

https://thefifthestate.com.au/innovation/design/patterns-for-cooling-the-commons-in-western-sydney/The Macarthur Garden North project is aiming for Green Star Communities sustainability certification from the Green Building Council of Australia.Cool commons have existed outside of Australia long before Landcom’s proposal.Stuttgart, Germany has been studying urban climatology since the 1930s and is leading the effort against the urban heat island effect after land development blocked valuable air flow through the mountains.Stuttgart’s green ventilation corridors allow cool air to flow in coordination with the city’s topography with bans on any potential obstructing construction and plenty of greenspace.#GlobalWarming #HeatIslands #NightParks #Climateology #City #Heatwave #Planning

@interneteh We have been through this many times as well.FWIW I agree with your list. While these two links are Australian in focus the similarity makes them at least relevant. http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/36597/GetReadyforaBushFire.pdfI found that and more here:https://www.abc.net.au/emergency/plan-for-emergency-bushfire/12412042

@strypey @stuartcroall Posting these here : In the off chance someone will do a #MetaTag search on #ProportionalVoting or #PostWestminsterDemocracy or some such.https://www.fairvote.ca/stv/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_transferable_voteHere in Australia we have a mix of systems across three levels of government,.MY preference is for what is called Single Transferable Vote ( generally Ozians call STV Hare/Clarke). Our _worst_ case is the federal House of Reps which is simpler and preferential only. First past the post should be limited to electing who's making the tea this arvo. In no sane electorate would it be used to decide the result of a referendum. (FFS! UK)The German (federal) and NZ systems have much to commend them. All that said *never underestimate the capacity of the Parties* (and associated industries) to beat any system to a shape that continues *their* reign.
