@futurebird Even if advertisers knew ads were becoming less effective as people become irritated by them, they would always respond by trying to compensate with more ads. Ads is what they do, they won't do less of them unless opposed by financial or regulatory constraints.

@futurebird I did wonder who decided that a stick of peppermint rock would be made somehow Christmassy by bending the end over to make it look like a walking stick.The theory I heard is it's not a mobility aid, it's a bishop's crook, because Saint Nicholas, right? The religious reference has been lost over time, and it's just a conventional habit, like depictions of gracile brown "reindeer" instead of chonky grey ones.

@futurebird In one sense, there is a person there, but not within the LLM, in the social simulation of "other person" running in the mirror neurons of the human interacting with the LLM.I could easily sound a lot more unhinged than a bene gesserit about letting an inhuman entity owned by billionaires trick your mirror neurons into simulating a "person" in your brain.

@futurebird Mostly it's not my business if someone I know believes some nonsense. I don't see it as my job to make them change their mind, just shrug and say "Nah, that sounds fake. Not convincing at all" and if us having different opinions about it is a problem, it is very much now their problem, not mine.

@futurebird @wakame The thing I keep saying is: an error message is not a person telling you what specifically went wrong this time. It's a string somebody writing the program months or years ago thought would describe what they *guessed* back then might cause the code to reach that state unexpectedly.1. Code can always be wrong, sometimes in ways the programmer hadn't thought of (in fact often since they probably handled the ways they'd thought of) and,2. Error handling code is code.

@futurebird @gleick When someone does something so needless and vicious, the simplest explanation that fits the facts is they wanted to do it.ICE have been recruiting people who want to be cruel, who want to dominate and bully, and yes, want an excuse and an opportunity to kill.Seeing one of their number get away with it and even be praised for it and shielded from consequences has emboldened some of them to look for opportunities with even thinner excuses to do the same.
