#GitHub, a very popular software #forge, is being designed and developed by a for-profit company. Same for #GitLab. And #Gitea mostly copies GitHub's design, and is now officially also under significant control of a company. When the day comes and we switch to a Federated Forge Network, operated using community-developed forges, how will the design & development of those forges work? What will be the governance model? Can the global #freesoftware #community organize together around this vision?

And can we, the people, operate a human-oriented multi-stakeholder software project with truly collaborative practices? Can we, together, develop and maintain the tools we need and use?Can we go beyond the systems of domination, patriarchy, power-over, structural hierarchy, us-and-them, instrumental-relationships, capitalism and race-to-growth-and-self-destruction, that are so common in our cultures and relationships?cc @smallcircles @forgejo @gitea @fsf @fsfe

@a FWIW, @mray and I are working on a frontend app for federated forges (currently in early design phase) ^_^

#freesoftware developers:When you have a #conflict between people in your project, whether it's friction in issue comments or big disagreement about a roadmap decision, or anything in between - How do you attend to the conflict? What do you do that works? What do you do that doesn't work? What's your dream about how it would happen, that you'd be proud of?Who else should I ask these?(Idea: A conflict engagement system for the global Free Software community! So I'm asking to explore)

I also asked this in the #socialcoding forum, so if you'd like more comfort to write a long detailed answer:https://discuss.coding.social/t/how-do-we-attend-to-conflicts-in-the-free-software-community/249

What would the global #software industry/sector - along with its "open source" branch and #freesoftware community - look like in a world tuned towards meeting human needs rather than profit and consumption? Here's a piece of #visionA @forgefed network where people and groups, organized in a decentralized #sociocracy structure, work to meet the world's software related needs, while the world provides/funds their material needsForgeFed is just the beginning. The foundation.

@forgefed news:I'm working on Vervis, the ForgeFed reference implementation written in Haskell. Refactoring the codebase into an actor model architecture, i.e. a system of objects that communicate by sending messages to each other's message queues.Progress so far: I created a simple library that implements a local actor system, and plugged Vervis's #ActivityPub implementation into it, to add the network part. Started porting the Person actor to the new system.Nothing to show yet :P

I'm about to start a year of focused work on ForgeFed & Vervis! 🥳The focus is on stabilizing the spec & creating tools for implementorsI'll be tracking my work using @vikunja 🦙 and you can see my kanban board here:https://todo.towards.vision/share/lecNDaQoibybOInClIvtXhEIFjChkDpgahQaDlmi/auth?view=kanbanThere's also a @forgefed Blog coming up :) 📜Work on a UI client app is also making progress, @mray & I are mapping features and UX piecesHuge thanks to NLNet for continued financial support of ForgeFed and people working on it ❤️

(1/3)I envision actors having public keys as their IDs, possibly with some system for updates/revocations. When actor references are passed, they're sent together with the current (or last known) network location of the actor. Each server keeps a directory mapping IDs to locations. Actors can transparently move between instances, by sending a Move notification about their new location. Anyone who misses the notification can query friends/others who did get it.(cont...)(1/3)

(2/3)In actor-model programming, it's possible for each actor to have its own separate database, which makes it trivial to move actors by copying their data! Of course this would be done securely, encrypting the data with the actor's own keyOnce we have such a system, we can play with network systems that manually/automatically move actors between servers, changing the shape of the network, without any impact on the application layer(cont...)(2/3)

(3/3)For example, an algorithm that balances the network by moving actors from busy/slow/large instances to smaller ones? And of course people manually moving for social/privacy/ToS/etc. reasonsThoughts/concerns about this whole idea? 🙏 #activitypub #nomadicidentity #decentraliziedcc @strypey @forgefed (3/3)

@trwnh I'm trying to keep it in line with ActivityPub and the current Fediverse. I do intend to use something RPC-like, in a different project and a different name.Does that answer your question? / Do you have a proposal?

Fantasy:Reusable #UI widgets based on #BlockProtocol or similar, with out-of-the-box data storage, streaming and API using a distributed actor-OCAP-RPC mechanism like @spritelyinst And a GUI low-code tool for mixing, matching and connecting these widgetsAllowing anyone to rapidly develop task-tailored UIs with an out-of-the-box #decentralized network backendJust don't let the capitalist system/money/crypto take over this dreamcc @smallcircles @cwebber

🎺 Invitation to use my support for your project :) 🎺I've been in the FLOSS community for many yearsI've been studying effective collaboration tools in the last few years, and I'm gradually shifting my focus there, to the soft skillsDo you have a project/community (actually, not necessarily software related) that might enjoy some sort of organizational advisor, to explore together the things that aren't working, and tweak them?I want to bring my gifts out there! :)DMs/Matrix welcome :)
