@futurebird I recall it becoming part of the common parlance via Amazon web services “elastic compute cloud”It may have been a term of art in some circles. But as I recall, prior hosting talked about “app servers” rather than “compute”.

@futurebird the last time I felt actually fear on the subway was right before everything shutdown with COVID. We knew there was a pandemic, that it could kill lots of people, but we all had to get to work anyways. So people had masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and we packed in on the train.

@futurebird for real. I live in a part of Crown Heights that’s nearly Brownsville. It’s not fancy. But when the right wing cycle is about how terrifying New York is, I go outside and people are enjoying the sun, walking to the park, sitting on benches, running errands, there is nothing alarming happening in the city at all.

@futurebird I think it’s more that Walmart’s logistics are optimized around getting products into the back of stores. Online logistics are different. They acquired jet.com for the online but it seems like it got dismantled. I think Walmart is good for pickup an in store, not so much for delivery.

@futurebird @mjr @MarkHoltom A colleague shared this story a while back. He lost the key to his bike. He got a cordless drill and started drilling out the cylinder of a very solid bike lock. While doing so, the police walked past and said nothing. His thought was - what is the point of this lock, if the police won’t even stop to ask what’s going on?I’m glad a fellow New Yorker helped out in the situation up thread.

@foone as someone whose entire career is building websites, web is a complex platform. I want to share my biggest gripe.I’m not talking about the usual complaints:- Widest possible range of client screens, cpu, memory, browsers- Widest possible range of clients from bots to people to various combinations- The APIs are like Windows and iOS layered on top of Markdown
