@CKsTechNews tbh, I don’t really understand where your continued hatred for MS comes from. No doubt some questionable business was conducted in the past, but they’re not the company they were 10-15 years ago anymore. (Disclaimer: I used to work there)And to your point: name me 1 company that doesn’t think their product is better than the one from the competition?

@Moon I don’t disagree. They have. But the reason I responded was because @CKsTechNews seems to single them out as if Microsoft was the scourge of mankind every single time they mention them.Personally I think there are worse offenders (but maybe I’m biased).

@stux don’t, instead go talk to them. I’m sure you could work something out given the fact that you never got the original bill.

@a_greg_gator @Gargron @ada @fediversenews @atomicpoet since you don’t mince your words, I won’t either. What you’re suggesting is stupid. There is no “central thread”. There many, many threads. And even if there was, who would want to follow that barrage of messages? Also, think of what it would mean to replicate that thread between thousands and thousands of servers. Think of the bandwidth, storage and compute required. It would mean the death of small servers and a return to centralisation

@a_greg_gator @atomicpoet @fediversenews @Gargron @ada again: centralisation. Who would own that central reference point? How do we know the owner doesn’t censor it? Or insert their own hashtags according to their convictions and beliefs?

@a_greg_gator @Gargron @ada @fediversenews @atomicpoet to say nothing of time syncing, connecting replies to original messages and having those show up everywhere. You’re basically describing Twitter.

@a_greg_gator @fediversenews @atomicpoet @ada @Gargron and I repeat that due to the sheer volume of such a thread, it would mean the death of small servers. And also: what would be on that thread? Everything? Every messages posted by every user on every server?

@a_greg_gator @atomicpoet @Gargron @ada @fediversenews also Greg: I don’t really understand why you would want such a thing? Does it matter that a hashtag already exists? They don’t cost anything. Create them, subscribe to them and toots will start streaming to you. Not all of them, but enough, certainly if you’re on a larger server

Does anyone have a nice step-by-step description on how to move an existing #mastodon server instance to another machine. I think I know but it would be nice to have a *tested* checklist.Note: I’m NOT talking about migrating my #fediverse account to another instance. That’s easy enough 😊.I’m talking about taking an existing running Mastodon instance, backing it up, taking the server down and deploying again on different machine without causing issues or loss of data.#mastoadmin #mastoadmins

@ruud Thanks Ruud. The DNS TTL setting was in my notes already. So you mean you just prepared the target server, then rsync'd the entire contents of /home/mastodon?

@lowqualityfacts It's kind of embarrassing for such a well-known brand that they don't seem to know the difference between "insure" and "ensure".
