Sometimes literal translations can be mega retarded, so its hard to say. The problem is translations can be easily manipulated for political purposes. For instance, in Chinese it's a common greeting to tell someone "you've fattened up" when you haven't seen them for a while. Its a leftover from the starvation days and its a good thing. Imagine if I didn't tell you that context though and I just said "he says you've gotten fat"
