@BrodieOnLinux GIMP doesn't need to compete with Photoshop. Promoting that idea is silly. If gimp doesn't work for you that is all fine and well. But there is no competition.

@andrew NFS will give you the best performance. There is a feature called local copies in darktable that'll copy your raw to the cache disk and let you edit while the share is not mounted.
