Figured I should explain this here in case folk are wondering why my finger is often in my photos - I have scale bars tattooed on my index fingers, the lines and dots are 5mm apart and they’re super useful for quick field photos 😅 Demonstrated here with some gorgeous crinoidal limestone from Fife 🏴

There’s a lot going on in this wee agate in matrix 🖤 this agate has formed inside a vesicle in a volcanic rock. The vesicles formed when this magma erupted around 400 million years ago - the eruption was volatile and contained a high proportion of gases which slowly escaped as the lava cooled, leaving lots of wee air bubbles! #scottishagates #scottishgeology #agate

It’s quite hard to picture how big blue whales actually are.. but these whale jawbones once formed an impressive entrance arch to Lamberton farm! I remember being pure mesmerised by these as a kid, it’s sad to see how much they’ve decayed.

Walking in the footsteps of giant Triassic reptiles at Kildonan 🖤 this trace fossil is known as Chirotherium (meaning hand-beast) and it was made by a huge crocodile-like reptile that once roamed Arran when it was still part of the supercontinent Pangaea 240 million years ago 🖤

For an animal that has its anus situated right next to its mouth, crinoids really do make some of the prettiest fossils 🖤 #FossilFriday
