@seleaI agree it's frustrating when people don't meet you where you are. Many Christians can be quite dense to reading the room.If biblical historicity is a topic you are genuinely interested in discussing, I'd recommend F.F. Bruce's "The New Testament Documents: Are they reliable?". It's short and won't waste the hour or so it will take to read it. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

@realcaseyrollinsShe's basically asking us to absolve her stepson of his responsibility for (or his agency over) his actions. The follow-up question is: does someone carry responsibility for his death? My view is that even if he had MH troubles he's still responsible for himself, unless there was a change of powers of attorney. So I probably wouldn't change my language on the situation.

We've kept them alive for over 24 hours so it's probably good to post at this point. We are new owners of 4 Australorp pullets. The coop is already installed, but it still needs a run and we have predators that live outside. So for the time being, and until it warms up a bit more, we'll be keeping them in here.

@realcaseyrollinsIt's alright. I'm happy and content and enjoy life, so it doesn't bother me.

Computer security peeps: does anyone know of a tool that would be like the POTS equivalent of "nmap -O"? Meaning, if I have a random phone number, is there a way to identify what kind of phone picks up when I dial it?I suspect POTS is too dumb for this but we have geniuses everywhere and I haven't been surprised yet today.

@publiusYeah I expect you're correct. I had kind of wondered if someone had done some kind of acoustic analysis to determine if a remote headset could be identified. For smartphones I think this might be plausible, but for older dumb headsets probably not.It was mainly a thought experiment. Not sure if this would be useful at all, though I'm sure some social engineer or pentester would find a use for it. It's way out of my skillset to follow up on.

Took time yesterday to get hibernate working on my encrypted laptop running #opensuse and I feel vastly better for making the effort.Leaving my laptop plugged in for months at a stretch just to avoid losing my desktop setup was getting real annoying and wearing on my battery.Only took over two years to get fed up with suspend-only.

@publius I never had a problem with suspend either. It's hibernate that's given me problems (where the laptop saves RAM to swap and then shuts down, to restore on next boot up). Part of it is my own doing with an encrypted swap, but the other part was some key configuration pieces missing in the default #opensuse setup. And I didn't want to keep wearing out my battery by leaving it plugged in!

So this is Scriptura, a #cli based frontend to the Sword project, which is a set of #opensource / #foss #bible study tools.I started this as a cooped-up-in-my-house COVID project and am happy to finally bring it to a useful beta stage.I don't imagine many of my fellow #christianity people do your studying in a terminal, but now you can if you want.https://tildegit.org/paladin1/scriptura

So I ordered my #LimeSDR back in May. I think they either couldn't get the parts or it was stuck in some shipping container, but it finally arrived this past week. That means this winter will be #sdr #hamradio projects. I enjoy my #hackrf but the thing is rather deaf.

So our main TV is set up with the PlutoTV channels and lately its default when being turned on is to show Hi-Yah! - the channel that shows really bad Chinese (typically kung-fu) movies. I admit this is a guilty pleasure of mine.1/

When I say bad, I mean hilariously bad. A couple days ago it was a wire-fu movie where a British colonial-era soldier drinks a potion to make him turn green like the Hulk, except it wasn't clear that he got any extra powers from it. He fought and was defeated by a Chinese acupuncturist who kung-fu kicked a broken sword tip into an acupuncture point that would make the potion avoid the soldier's heart and flow backward in his veins, paralyzing him.2/3

@sj_zeroI would think they'll claim famine is due to the invasion of Ukraine. They are/were a food & fertilizer powerhouse, after all.

@ParadeGrotesqueI've been happy with OpenSUSE. I wanted a stable distro with a rolling release and they have done well by me.I use i3 instead of Gnome, so I can't comment on that.
