       @fishidwardrobe @brennansv @rlux This is a crucial part I keep seeing folks gloss right over“Choose your instance carefully!”Based on what? It’s not like I can get a quick psych evaluation of each admin and how likely they are to defederate at the first hint of a disagreement.Many instances have similar rules and codes of conduct, but enforcement seems wildly different and unpredictable.I don’t want to have to wade through years of petty online drama to pick the right server.

       Tried out https://kitten.small-web.org today for a little tiny character sheet "app" I've been working on.It's really nice. It was super easy to set up and get started and the self-contained nature of everything was perfect for my needs.Excellent work, @aral!

       @Hippie Autistic folks have a nasty historical habit of pointing out unfairness and injustice, and refusing to transgress moral and ethical boundaries, which is a bit of a bother if your whole thing is running a fascist oligarchy.

       @ned The same goes for the UK. The British massacred, starved, enslaved and otherwise subjugated tens/hundreds of millions of people all over the world, but it’s not taught to us as akin to fascism.I think it’s because it didn’t end. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy/Spain have convenient end-dates we can point at that separate “literal fascism” from whatever we think we are now, whereas the US and UK were never explicitly made to stop. So what we’ve been doing must have been something else.

       @aral I was trying to put a small third party widget from a massive company on our website recently. They make you choose up front whether the widget is in dark mode or light mode. So they even went to the trouble of creating styles for a dark mode, but then didn’t think to provide a version that just reacts to the browser environment and uses the correct colour mode. It’s so shit.
