@adamdavidson I think what's confusing is that dodging a bullet (or in this case many bullets) is a source of relief and an encouraging sign but any sense of hope can only be short lived because the ongoing “bullets” of the larger anti-democratic movement will keep coming. In short, the incentive structure on the right—with or without Trumpism—will continue to encourage a range of anti-democratic efforts for years (decades?) to come and eventually some "bullets" won't be dodged.

One of the things I loved about the early days of the net was the variety and specificity of online communities. For years, there were innumerable niche hangouts for people with common interests. Sadly, the arrival of one-size-fits-all “social networks” kinda nuked those worlds. We went from organizing around shared passions or neighborhoods to "friends" and "followers." What's exciting about this current moment is that Mastodon might be bringing niche community back. https://instances.social/list#lang=&allowed=&prohibited=&min-users=&max-users=

Reading this post from the host of an information security-focused instance helped realize why Mastodon reminds me of the online communities of my youth. When I was coming of age (late 80s), my primary form of online community was Bulletin Board Systems and most of these micro-communities only existed thanks to a passionate host who supported them as a labor of love. These niche Mastodon communities have that same awesome (and fragile) BBS energy and I hope it flourishes. https://mastodon.social/@jerry@infosec.exchange/109377512824996767

“Tesla Autopilot crash numbers are far higher than those of similar driver-assistance systems from GM and Ford. To be comparable with Ford’s rate, Tesla ought to have a NHTSA-reported crash total of 70 since last summer. Instead Tesla reported 516 crashes.”https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2022-12-27/tesla-stopped-reporting-autopilot-safety-statistics-online

“It seemed absolutely crazy. The idea that an Iowa housewife, equipped with the cutting-edge medical tool known as Google Images, would make a medical discovery about a pro athlete who sees doctors and athletic trainers as part of her job?” https://www.propublica.org/article/muscular-dystrophy-patient-olympic-medalist-same-genetic-mutation

New study finds “strong evidence that BLM protests were associated with an increased likelihood of voting for the 2020 Democratic candidate.” Further, effect was “concentrated among less contentious protest events (with arrests, injury, or violence).” https://bit.ly/3WHXHDV

“Housing for cars is super-cheap and housing for people is super-expensive. At some point, when the delta between the space for cars and the space for people becomes so, so large, then people begin to think about living in cars.” — @asymco https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-11-26/cal-poly-humboldt-students-who-live-in-vehicles-are-ordered-off-campus
