They are blatantly abusing the market share of their platforms to give their browser (which already enjoys the benefits of shipping as default with an OS) an Edge over competing browsers.

Hilariously, Apple tried to claim with a straight face to the EU, that it offers not one, but three distinct web browsers all coincidentally named Safari.Lucky for us the team at the EC dismissed this ludicrous gambit and painstakingly ripped Apple's argument to shreds. It is baffling to us why Apple's legal team is willing to sacrifice their credibility on something that has such a low chance of success.

From the register:"Cupertino also claimed it maintains five app stores and five operating systems, and that these core platform services, apart from iOS, fell below the usage threshold European rules set for regulating large platform services and ensuring competition."

""According to Apple, Safari on iOS, Safari on iPadOS and Safari on macOS qualify as web browsers within the meaning of [the DMA requirements]," the case summary explained, noting that Apple argued only Safari for iOS falls within the DMA's scope."

Apple made this attempt despite the Digital Markets Act containing specific clauses to address this exact behaviour:

With only 57 days left until the EU brings in rules which allow fair browser competition, Apple's legal games have begun with an attempt to split the AppStore into 5 separate entities. Apple's AppStore effectively bans all other browsers so it's a must that it be regulated.Read more over at: https://open-web-advocacy.org/blog/apple-filing-eu-appstores/

🚨 New Article: Is It Worth Killing Mozilla to Shave Off Less Than 1% From Google’s Market Share? The DOJ is seeking to cancel all of Google's revenue-sharing deals with browser vendors. 🧵 ✅ We agree the Apple-Google deal should be cancelled.⚠️ But we're concerned about the impact on smaller browsers — especially Mozilla. 💰 Google currently pays Mozilla about $410–$420 million per year.👉 https://open-web-advocacy.org/blog/is-it-worth-killing-mozilla-to-shave-off-less-than-1-percent-from-googles-market-share

❓ It's unclear whether Bing or DuckDuckGo could even match a quarter of that. 🛠️ Mozilla needs significant funding to maintain Gecko, one of just three major browser engines still in active use worldwide.🌐 Gecko helps keep the web open and competitive.📉 Cancelling Google’s deal with Mozilla would reduce Google's U.S. search engine market share by less than 0.75%.🤔 Is that really worth the cost?

🔥Now 9to5Mac quotes OWA: "Apple claimed it didn’t know why no browser vendor has ported their engine to iOS over the past 15 months. But the reality is Apple knows exactly what the barriers are, and has chosen not to remove them." 👉https://9to5mac.com/2025/07/14/apple-profits-means-iphone-users-still-get-no-real-browser-choice-says-group/
