@vortex_egg Agreed. Consciously taking energy away from something is a challenge.

@thegibson @vortex_egg I tend to go for substitution myself. "If X comes to mind, think about Y" and to make Y pleasant and reasonably mild.

@vortex_egg @thegibson @docskrzyk I found David Foster Wallace's Kenyon address to be really helpful in explaining this topic."Two young fish are swimming along, and an older fish comes up the other way and says 'howdy kids, how's the water today?' And as the older fish swims past, one of the younger fish looks to the other and asks, what's water?'This is water: that every person on Earth is possessed of the same sense of being the center of the universe."

@vortex_egg @docskrzyk @thegibson It's really easy to look at folks like Crowley, RAW, Gregory Gardner -- or any of the classic messiahs -- and mistake the messenger for the message. This is one reason I love the Subgenius idea of the shorderpersav, which is basically Kleenex for saviors: soft, strong, and intentionally disposable.

Almost as an impulse buy but with the sharp stink of desperation, I've bought a smartwatch. It's a TicWatch Pro 3 GPS by a Chinese company called Mobvoi, and I picked it because multiple reviews called it assured me it was the best meh for the money if I wasn't ready to switch to Apple.I'm not ready to switch to Apple, but I am desperately tired of feeling like my tech isn't solving my tech needs, so here we go.

I bought a Cosmo Communicator because some part of the squidgy lump of grey matter between my ears refuses to let go of physical keyboards on personal assistants because I'm faster thumbboarding than I am Swyping, and because I hate the idea that the tools on which I feel like I have to rely in order to function as a complete person are first and foremost a platform on which to serve me ads.

Even with that, my spouse ended up recommending I wait until the firmware hackers had cleaned up a bunch of stuff to make it a daily driver. They finally did, and so much credit to @ElectricKeet for their help in getting Galena's new shell set up.But for all that I love the form-factor... it's inconvenient for bloody everything. It's just quirky enough about autorotate that I find it easier to manually flip the screen, and I have to open the case to do anything.

So, in a desperate hope to make the promise of technology do what I want it to do, I got a watch that gives me a better means to interact with my phone as well as a better reminder system to prompt me to go take care of myself and the people around me.I know what I need to do to make progress, but 0 to 1 is always the hardest step, and I have so many different paths I know I have to walk. And nobody can walk any of these paths but me.The company is nice, though.

... I may have just had at least part of a breakthrough.Feel the Wear connects notifications on the phone to the watch...SimplePush converts API requests on the server to notifications on the phone via a unique key on the phone with end-to-end encryption...... and SimplePush provides a Python SDK....... which means I may actually be able to directly reprogram myself, at least as long as Python2.7 exists in the wild... xvx

This morning, the scale had be below where I was when the pandemic started.Technically, it had me a half-kilo below my old previous baseline, but it feels way too premature to say it like that. The last thirty years of biological neglect will not go away because I had a few good weeks of getting outside.I haven't had any time to work on the tooling at all, but what little I did get set up is still working at least.
