@jamesgunn I love imagining them posing for these “naturalistic” photos.“Okay Jerry, you sit down and look serious.”“Can I hold a pen? I like holding a pen.”“Sure, yeah, grab a pen. Now, Joe…?”

@BarrenPlanet @allisonwyss I did something like this, recently. I had a long description of (in effect) a paranoid nightmare that goes on and on and on.Until it stops. The paragraph break and lack of a "denouement" for the description are effective, I think. It's like using line breaks in poetry. The one other person who's read it so far said it worked on her.

@Sigma I mean, technically America was a check on Russian nuclear power in the cold war, but it's debatable whether that made the world safer.

@mike @anne @DeliaChristina I remember that strike! They could have negotiated a gentle transition to a new career within IATSE, but Local 1 in New York forbid them from negotiating on their own behalf and refused to do it for them. They hung that local out to dry.

@herhandsmyhands This is just going to make people go back to piracy. They made streaming to defeat it, but they’re inviting it back in. Dumbasses.

@grammargirl Off-topic/tangent: is the "Valley girl" actually a thing or just a product of that one record where one girl made up some fake slang for 30 seconds, hence "gag me with a spoon"? (I have never even been to LA, so forgive my lack of local knowledge. If any Los Angelenos would like to enlighten me, I'm here for it.)

Once you’ve got #ArtificialGravity in a #ScienceFiction story, you don’t need to build ships and stations as if they have a top and a bottom: decks layered on top of each other.I assume some writer has realized this and made ships, stations, etc. that have floors in every which direction. Can anyone think of one?

@mekkaokereke "Fewer than 20"!?I knew it would be a low number, but holy shit, that is shamefully low.

@mekkaokereke That is *sobering*!I know economics alone cannot fix racism—I mean, obviously—but holy shit, could economics alleviate a LOT of barriers. The US's tuition rates seem to exist in order to keep people of colour out, and poor people in general (but I suspect I'm preaching to the choir).

@mekkaokereke Holy shit. There's so much more deliberate malice in these systems than I expect. Also, nine out of ten times, things in the US that "don't make sense" are because of racism. Over and over again, that country ties itself in knots to maintain racism. I'm still in a kind of disgusted awe at how deep it goes.Edit: I think it was the vanilla ice cream thing that broke my brain. The sheer pettiness of it.

@eleanorrees Exactly. If you're an expert, you can judge the results with some accuracy; also if you're an expert, you didn't need the LLM.

@grammargirl It would be interesting, if we had the data, to look at exactly when this happened and how people use it. Your explanation is plausible, but now I wonder if we can test it.I also think "contact" sounds more sophisticated or technical, the way people say "utilize" instead of "use," just bc it has more syllables and sounds vaguely Latin.

@tante I'm reading this from a writers' instance, and it's really really important to resist the urge to write stories about the "singularity" just because, like the article says, it's a great SF premise. If we're going to write about this stuff, we should all be Cory Doctorow and viscously mock it for the world-destroying stupidity that it is.

@futurebird Directly parallel to how "pro-life" forces refuse to a damn thing for women and families, before or after the baby is born.

@futurebird "The Book" in 1984, has a chilling passage about how to control education so that there is just enough science and engineering to produce weapons of war and extractive industry, but never enough, or never the right kind, to produce the ability to question the state.

@futurebird That's a fantastic idea. I would have just hung out there. Dances were both socially mandatory and distinctly unpleasant.

I had a "clever" idea to introduce a character in the middle part of my book only to find them again, years later, having transitioned, and play it as a surprise. As in,we meet Jacinta, and then much later,we meet Wiktor, and my POV character reveals they're the same person by reintroducing herself to him (Wiktor). But then I thought, am I perpetuating the stereotype that trans ppl are trying to "trick" us cissies? Thoughts?#Writing #Writers #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #AmWriting #trans
