Do I know anyone who used geocities when it was running? Or who uses neocities now? Or both? 😯🤯

Sorry for the similar questions to everyone, I'll add them here:On geocities:- Did you find much community on there? - How did you find learning web stuff/using the site to upload stuff? - Was it your first web dev experience? On neocities: What drew you to it? Do you have much community on it?

I have loads of questions because I'm researching for blogs and videos about what we can learn and what we shouldn't repeat from the early web.I have a lot of questions around:- the hosting landscape; was it mostly uni or geocities?- anyone who made games early; i know only a little about the experience of making flash games- how the hell any of you found anything before google? Someone said there were ads and i refuse to believe you were solely typing in urls from bits of paper?

In case there are any obvious conclusions I'm missing:What do people think the biggest lessons from the history of the web are? What do you hope "comes back", what are you hoping stays dead, and what do you hope is to come?I'd appreciate RTs (and long detailed replies lol)!

Does anyone know how the internet archive works, in terms of things like:- are they hoping the archive will last the next 100 hundred years? the next 1,000? if so, what are they doing to ensure this?- what is it hosted on? I did a double take at Amazon being involved with the beginnings (according to Wikpedia) but understandable I guessstill googling so might answer my own questions but thought some of youse might have cool answers.

I've always got the vague/not so vague (people telling me they "visited some of their servers") impression it's all privately managed servers somewhere, but in that case do they have stewardship rules and stuff? @internetarchive i forgot youse might even be on here to ask!

@textfiles @jm3 @internetarchive thanks so much for the detailed answer!I assume there's no public facing policy on the longevity stuff right? (couldn't find it in the FAQs)
