Today I had opportunity to activate #WWFF reference OHFF-0354 again. I spent three hours on air with #IC705 and my #EFHW antenna.I had total of 59 QSOs and the logs are quite astonishing:SSB QSOs to Finland, Germany, Poland, Italy, USA (I really want QSL from this), Sweden, Spain, Slovenia, Ukraine, Slovakia and Netherlands.and FT8 QSOs to Germany, Italy, Czech, New Caledonia, Denmark, Canada, Poland, Finland, Croatia, France, Hungary, Netherlands, England and Crete.I'm happy!

@rimugu Right. Then you could try shortening your wire temporarily by folding it backwards.

Amazing 6m opening is over.I logged 30 QSOs on #FT8. My trusty 80m #EFHW is amazing on 6m band and with 20W from #FT891 the list of stations who heard me is quite staggering. And this was the first full day on grid KP45. Maybe there's more amazing openings coming next week!

Short intro!I'm trying to get back into ham radio. I've had license since 1999, but just now building my first HF setup. I have a lot to learn.I'm currently interested about learning HF and digimodes (FT-8, JS8Call, VARA). Just a bit over 10 QSOs on logbook now. I also hope going outdoors portable to do WWFF activations when it's not freezing cold in northern Finland.Currently I have second hand FT-891 and temporary random wire antenna to get on air. 73#introduction #introductions

@hb9hox @Ea5iyl I'm advocate of open source also. But it is not simple. If you do it for your freetime then the burden of maintenance is a real chore. And you still need to have your day job. Alternative is to sell your product and work it full time to pay the bills.Innovation (closed source or not) is the key. Moving forward is key. Competition is good. If someone steps up with FOSS competitor for VARA: Good! But if not then we continue using VARA because it gets the job done.

@Ea5iyl @clacke @hb9hox VARA HF accomplishes a successful digital two way communication between two amateur radio stations.I can send Winlink email from my portable station in Oulu to a station in Oslo using just 10W of power. That's 1000km QSO.The speed is adjust automatically to conditions. With good propagation I can see nice transfer speeds, but with bad propagation or interference it still can function, but with lower speeds.I've not yet found another tool with similar performance.

@Ea5iyl @clacke @hb9hox I'd love to see volunteers taking the challenge and start implementing open source version or competing alternative to VARA.But while we're waiting, I'm happy to see the project continuously evolving and being used in real world. We are not entitled to push down a project if at the same time we do not ourselves step up and provide alternative. There's too much hate and negativity in the world already.Nobody is forced to use it. And many users area happy with it.

I found an old QSL card for sale in Finland. It's QSO between F8JA and OH5NQ. The date in card is 1930-10-09. So soon 100 year old. Anyone in France know if this station still exists? Please boost for reach. Can we find anyone related to F8JA callsign?#HamRadio #France #QSL #PaperQSL

@selea @cos If you study Finland's landscape and architecture you can easily see that we don't have mountains nor skyscrapers. We need to utilize the high stuff that we have instead of invent rules that can't work here.

@selea @cos Then you can probably appreciate the radio-only network that we have reaching from almost Stockholm to almost Arctic Circle.Without skyscrapers or mountains, but still many routers :)

@fredy_pferdi @boogerly @thomas_klopf It is not permitted to use encryption on radio amateur bands so can't use #Reticulum there.

@fredy_pferdi @boogerly @thomas_klopf It feels like you are confusing globally regulated radio amateur usage with license free usage that most LoRa applications use. LoRa user still needs to follow the regulation of the specific radio band.E.g. in EU SRD860 band is mostly used for Meshtastic, The Things Network, etc. but it doesn't have anything to do with amateur radio.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short-range_device#SRD860

@fredy_pferdi @boogerly @thomas_klopf Yes. And my original toot was about using Reticulum on amateur radio bands. This is illegal on most jurisdictions (I couldn't find any exceptions).

@thomas_klopf @fredy_pferdi @boogerly You'll need a TNC modem and connect that with Reticulum. TNC is a hardware or software tool that makes turns streams of bits into fancy sounds and other way around. Then you connect TNC into radio. For example FreeDVTNC2 (https://github.com/xssfox/freedvtnc2) or Direwolf (https://github.com/wb2osz/direwolf) are free software TNC modems.
