#askFedi my son would like a portable digital audio player. I've been looking for information online and I've seen the HiBy mentioned often as a good option. Does anybody have hands-on experience or is it just #astroturfing? Any recommendations?

@GroupNebula563 thanks, I'll look them up. TBH my only requirements are (1) USB-C charging without risk of blowing up the port it gets connected to (2) support for the FLAC audio format (in its own and in Ogg container) and (3) removable storage (microSD or whatever). Audio quality as long as it's decent isn't that important. Bonus if it can withstand being handled by a hyperactive preteen.

@futurebird I grew up with multiple sisters at different age differences but altogether relatively close, and while we did have a tendency to be quite rigid about portioning in our younger days, we've mostly grown out of it. The youngest does seem to be still a bit hung up on that though.

@kaia oh, fantastic. The AI craze has made every single application massively more memory hungry because of features nobody wants but the devs need to show everywhere to reach KPI, but at the same time the massive price hike due to the shortage caused by datacenter focus makes high-memory devices more scarce. Capitalism at its best.

@neauoire @Screwtapello yeah, it's a bashism, and it's “basically” syntax sugar for pipes, but very useful especially when you need more than one (I use it often with vimdiff). For a single one you can *usually* just use a plain pipe if you need a more POSIX-compliant way of doing things, i.e.curl whatever | left -*if* the right-hand-side program supports the common convention of indicating standard input with -. Otherwise, /dev/stdin will usually work just as well.

And you can make an example of weird digits even before getting to base 16 if you want to try your luck at teach them about balanced ternary after showing them the classic unbalanced version (use the the upper-side down 1 for the -1 value in writing, or T if typing: «why T?» «Because the Setun never gained commercial success»).

@futurebird this is hard to reply to because:(1) phone booths have become extremely rare, but they still exist and work(2) I have found a couple of solar powered bench chargers with USB ports around but never managed to get them to work reliably.So on the one hand, I'd like to check a couple of those, OTOH, «not really»?
