@freemo @stux Right, but if you're selling NFTs, which ar meant to replace copyright, why would you copyright the images tied to your tokens?

@nousnaut Even without the whistleblower story it's awful, but with it it's a travesty.

The flood of people claiming Google killed both RSS and XMPP/Jabber seems to be picking up new folks who've started claiming that, too. I'm reminded a bit about the time someone asked Alan Moore how he felt about Hollywood ruining his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics in a film adaptation. He said something along the lines of "I'm looking at the books right now on my shelf, they're fine."

@tek My dad died when I was in my late 20s, and my sister and I were assigned a rookie funeral director / mortician to handle the cremation. He said we were literally the first family they let him talk to.As he was talking about urns, I busted out my "your most modestly priced vessel" Big Lebowski quote, and he nodded and said "ahh, you want the 'bare-bones' package" and then his eyes went wide and he turned white as a sheet. My sister and I laughed and laughed and he got less uncomfortable.

It's an unpopular viewpoint, but all these bullets are what I've thought about pretty much constantly since 2017 when I started using Mastodon.https://blog.bloonface.com/2023/07/04/the-fediverse-is-a-privacy-nightmare/

I'm not sure it's a fair argument against the anti-Meta FUD (a FUD declaration doesn't necessarily signify that it's bad FUD or good FUD) but I think it's sure *reasonable* to want to shore up the house you built upon the sand before declaring whether someone else's sand-houses can come visit.

I've been chided many times since 2017 for talking about this because "making people scared will encourage them not to use ActivityPub."The first step to having nice things is being willing to make them nice.

@mansr @mcc as long as you consider "nuke it all and clone from an earlier commit" as "one way"

That this headline about Threads engagement levels uses the word "cratered" seems appropriate, since launch was essentially an explosion. Once something is done exploding, the baseline left over is a crater. I hate the tendency to call things failures when they fail to maintain a ridiculous marketing-fueled launch-day explosion.https://gizmodo.com/engagement-instagram-threads-falls-meta-blocks-vpn-eu-1850640519

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was getting everyone to talk so much about his upcoming thing that he didn't need to spend a dime and it still surpassed everyone's expectations for how many souls he could harvest

I *want* to believe that Meta federating will (eventually) have a positive impact on the fediverse, but also, if I were in the business of taking content people made for free and using it for my nefarious purposes, federation would absolutely be the way I would approach it. The more people making content to display inside my ad machine the better.I think the conspiracy theory that they're only *pretending* they're going to federate to boost their numbers is kind of silly.

There are a couple funny early #Android stories that I've been completely unable to source details for, relying only on my memory which is now the worst I can ever remember my memory being. Maybe you recall some details?1. The time someone ported a new Android release to the iPhone (I want to say it was iPhone 4) before any actual Android phones had it. Do you recall which release that was?2. The time the date picker in a new release was missing an entire month. I want to say it was May?

the funniest #Android story of all was how the first Android phone got rooted. This guy's girlfriend impatiently asked why he hadn't replied yet to her text that she sent while his phone was rebooting. He replied "reboot" and watched as his phone rebooted. It turns out all keypresses on the device were being piped into a root shell. So, then he typed 'sshd' and it fired up an ssh server where he could simply log in as root. I don't think it even had a password.

I would love to hear any "whoops!" stories you have in the same vein. Things people shipped with terrifying mistakes or even just ridiculous things like an entire month missing from the calendar.

This was the T-Mobile G1 / HTC Dream. It had a physical keyboard, and it was those keypresses that were piped into a root shell. There was not an on-screen keyboard yet, but if there were, I doubt its input would have been piped through a root shell.
