For those of you working with #googleDocs:doc.new, sheet.new, form.new, slide.new, site.new - are all valid domains that create new document, spreadsheet, etc. It's not a browser hack, .new is a valid #TLD

I really enjoyed The Daily podcast by @nytimes about #Tesla: "#ElonMusk’s Appetite for Destruction". It challenges overly optimistic crash statistics of full self driving mode https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/26/podcasts/the-daily/elon-musk-tesla-self-driving.html

Meet Andrzej Dragan, 45yo Polish artist, known for his unique photo editing skills His photo sessions of Joss Stone or Mads Mikkelsen are beautiful but disturbing. He also directed short movies for #Netflix, as well as several music videos, e.g. for death metal band #Behemoth. Also he used to be an electronic music composer.Oh, and he also co-authored about 60 scientific papers because he's a quantum physics professor specialized in relativity. What a legend! https://andrzejdragan.com

Welcome to the XXI century, where changing background to dark in your editor requires a plugin with 45k downloads. And that plugin secretly leaks your metadata: https://blog.checkpoint.com/securing-the-cloud/malicious-vscode-extensions-with-more-than-45k-downloads-steal-pii-and-enable-backdoors/

How #Meta / #Threads developer Ben Savage was 'welcomed' on #ActivityPub mailing list ☹️:“The company you work for does disgusting things among others. It harms relationships and isolates people. It builds walls and lures people into them. When that doesn't suffice, brutal peer pressure does … That said, welcome to the list, Ben.”I'd say this message is disguisting... Lucky, other were more open | https://www.wired.com/story/metas-threads-could-make-or-break-the-fediverse/

My favorite feature of #DuckDuckGo? You can browse results using ⬆️ and ⬇️ keys. Also, the fact that they are not spying and the results are often more useful than #Google...

For days I couldn't figure out why American podcasts I listen to suddenly feature Spanish ads. It just occurred to me that I became a victim of dynamic ad insertion (#DAI). A clever mechanism that injects audio ads to existing #podcast episodes based on various tracking information. A month ago I was in Spain for vacation and now I'm listening to episodes downloaded back then (I have a long backlog). What a sad time to be alive

@kubukoz It's not player's fault. The player just downloads MP3 pointed in podcasts' #RSS feed. It's the podcasts' hosting provider that injects ads on the fly when download is requested. Nothing unusual in web pages (see: real-time bidding), but it's the first time I see this mechanism in audio. But answering your question, I'm using @overcastfm and it's absolutely amazing

Imagine this scenario:1. Send a message to a queue through broker2. Broker returns message ID, we store in our local database3. Message is consumed by another system4. The other system sends reply to `responses` queue5. We listen to responses6. When we receive a response, we correlate it with message ID stored in point 2.Guess what? Sometimes we couldn't find a message ID in the database, yet (point 6 happened before 2 committed). Distributed system are hard

@lamp It's called *hoisting* and it's indeed very confusing. These days prefer `const` or `let` instead of `var`: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/Hoisting #JavaScript

I barely remember reading "Clean Code" by Uncle Bob. But example in the article "Don’t Refactor Like Uncle Bob. Please" is indeed frightening and terrible. Changing a simple function to a short-lived mutable object is counterproductive at best: https://theaxolot.wordpress.com/2024/05/08/dont-refactor-like-uncle-bob-please/
