@strypey Where is the contradictory evidence? Not a rhetorical question! I haven't studied this in depth, but the main paper I know about that studied this supports the less restrictive camp: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10368-007-0086-4

What's the rationale for the shift from Ctrl+k to Ctrl+v for adding a hyperlink to text?I find it confusing because I expect different behavior from Ctrl+v (replace with clipboard contents).

@wjmaggos I run Matrix in my lab and force students and collaborators on it. But the onboarding friction (key management, verification) is still too high. Those need to be addressed before I would recommend it for activist groups who can't afford to lose participants to so-so UX.

@wjmaggos Yes, still with the new versions. Students have trouble with setting up the keys and getting verified; I don't think the interface is very successful in communicating what those things mean and why they are necessary and how to achieve them.

For Earth Day today, I had the honor of remembering Pope Francis on Democracy Now, recalling how first reading his Laudato Si' brought me to tears and how he saw social movements as a site of revelation: https://www.democracynow.org/2025/4/22/pope_francis_vatican_climate_crisis

It is pretty awesome how @pop_os_official COSMIC is combining the slickness of GNOME with the flexibility of XFCE.

It has been the honor of my work life to serve the people of Colorado as a professor at CU Boulder, and to have my colleagues' support—today, with a medal recognizing tenure. I'm wearing a sweater from my grandfather, an earlier Prof. Schneider.

So what is the deal with @matrix android clients? The fully featured Element is no longer supported, and Element X is not fully featured (and won't connect to my server). Third party apps are not fully featured. What is one to do?

For a taste of what I've been working on this season, I have a new, tiny-little essay in the in-house journal of our Center for Media, Religion, and Culture, Rhythms: "Are Protocols Elite?" Based on a collab with Avery Edenfield. https://www.colorado.edu/cmrc/2025/11/06/rhythms-fall-2025-counter-media

Happy birthday Calvin & Hobbes. https://www.npr.org/2025/11/18/nx-s1-5564064/calvin-and-hobbes-bill-watterson-40-years-comic-strip-lee-salemIt was only when reading it with my kids that I realized the secret message: Calvin acts like Calvin because adults almost never play with him. Like, actually play.

This becomes clear in just a few strips, the exceptions. Like the one where his dad finally drops his work and runs around with Calvin for a day. And everything goes great.

Debug this idea for me: A permissioned Mastodon server for kids and parents in a community.Goals:- Share plans for activities without parents having to text each other all the time- Be silly- Learn healthy social media norms under supervisionPolicies:- All messages (including direct) are auditable by parent admins- Collaboratively authored code of conduct
