@tante Totally true, but: people find themselves in the position of having been part of bad things all the time. It's good that we, as a society, can give them a way out. They need a redemption arc, else how do they redeem themselves?

@stux You're the next Tree Keeper, you've been summoned by the tree itself in a dream. But no one believes you, and what's more, powerful factions aim to have their own Keeper candidates get to the tree first.Or, the tree is sick and spawning terrible monsters that ravage the country side. You've got the cure, but you've got to make it to the tree.Or the tree is the site of the next planetary congress, and you've got info vital to the proceedings. But powerful factions, etc.

@futurebird @petergleick Why she's telling the story is the right Q, I think. It's true that killing animals is a part of farm life, and assuming the facts are as she says I'd hesitate to say she was wrong to do it, there may have been no better choice. But bragging about failing a dog so badly? And making it a marker for identity and politics? That's just weird - but equally, as a way of drawing tribal lines and playing identity politics, not stupid.

@futurebird Have you ever seen one in person? I haven't, but I have seen cougar (aka mountain lion, or catamount) and they're scary in a way that doesn't come through in pictures. I totally get wanting to hug a bear (don't!) but never a cougar.

@futurebird On the other hand, the more educated you are the more complex the world seems, and the less adequate to it your own understanding. You see more clearly the constraints on your own choice, and what ability to speak you have can seem just shouting into the void. In a way, each of those options is the way the other feels. It's not hard to see where education can seem a devil's bargain, that flips on it's head what you thought you were going to get from it.

@futurebird I hope you understand this as a compliment when I say I have no idea whether this is a reference to someone whose robes you hope moths eat, vs imagining a world with intelligent moths who have serious problems keeping themselves from consuming their own sartorial excellence.
