It's bad enough that small volumes of these stupid pickup trucks have been (illegally) imported into the EU under the IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) lately. The mutual safety standards recognition would totally open the floodgates.Just a reminder that this is the most popular-selling car in Europe next to the most popular-selling car in the US.We don't want these dangerous trucks in EU cities.

@zatrsakr The IVA is supposed to only be used for specialty cars (like classic cars or one-off unusual vehicles for special handicaps), so that they don't need to meet modern EU safety standards. But it's being used to import production US pickup trucks and the EU is way too slow to crack down on this abuse.This is not a legal use of the IVA.

Amsterdam has built a few of these, but I don't think any city is doing school streets as comprehensively as Paris. @Mab_813 @vfrmedia @hittitezombie SUVs and pickup trucks became so popular in my hometown that the city was forced to update their parking regulations to require larger parking spaces. The same will happen in Europe if we don't stop them first.

@paulnatsuo I talked about this in my Toronto streetcars video. The TTC is an extremely (small-c) conservative organisation.If they've always been doing something a certain way, they'll keep doing it forever, and they are never willing to look outside of North America.Even reading the minutes from the meeting about signal priority they kept talking about how it would be revolutionary in North America to let the trams go before left-turning cars. 🙄

@jwz You're almost certainly correct.I was involved in a street improvement project in Toronto and some shop owners claimed they'd go out of business if any of parking was removed.The math didn't make sense though, so some activists went out and recorded when the parking spaces were being used, with the goal of showing how many customers actually used the parking.In almost every case, there was only one car parked in the spot all day: the owner of the shop.

I remember when the DMCA was first being proposed and I was trying to tell anyone and everyone that anti-circumvention would be disastrous. I must admit that I had no idea how bad it would be. I knew that media companies would use it to enforce DRM, but I had no idea that John Deere would use it to brick tractors or that Medtronic would use it to stop hospitals from repairing ventilators.
