@avalos this assumes making all systems the same and / or interoperable is a positive thing.I don't think it is, and I really doubt anyone could provide a strong argument for it - but so many people assume it.Approachable or entirely consistent distros should exist, sure - but there's no reason why *all* Linux systems must be. I'm fine that systemd exists; but when it becomes an evangelical position, as it has, then it's an issue.

@tek This is the way.Give them a CAIQ/SIG as the starting point of a database of answers, have a couple high-level risk/tech resources available to field questions and do validation passes on completed questionnaires, and life is grand.

@tek Yep. This is my standard practice now for third party risk response. Usually the team running it stays under the Security department, sometimes under Sales, and has a name like Customer Trust and Assurance or similar. Learned it from a former employee who set up this style program at... uh... well, it's a Fortune 500 in the tech world.Similarly, I never recommend security departments run Awareness anymore. If you don't have a training team, have Marketing do it. They're better at it.

@calculsoberic @thegibson Exactly.Maybe we can't stop them from building dystopian tools of fascist regimes - but we can make using those tools suck a lot for the fascists.

@newt @evelyn Yes, but also no. Plumbing is absolutely magic, and the way it improves our lives even more so, and the way it makes cities possible is absolutely incredibly important. But also, in order to have plumbing that successfully does all of those things without just dumping the problems on someone else requires a high level of sophisticated control and processing that wasn't really possible without high tech, computerized, solutions.

"Calling someone a piece of shit for expressing an opinion is a little harsh, don't you think?"Look, if your opinion is that a movie is bad or the color red is a poor clothing choice or that tuna fish is yucky, yeah, that'd be harsh. If your opinion is that LGBTQ+ people are lesser people who should never be seen in the world, piece of shit is the polite end of the scale and you can fucking take it as such or I'll drop the filter.

@tek @r343l The code of ethics bans nudity involving genitalia and calls for violence as a blanket ban. A junior high student council could come up with a better one.Just in case you needed another data point for why this is stupid and horrific.

@michaelcoyote @OkieSpaceQueen @chillicampari The "Nazi bar" analogy is an excellent one, I think. Suppose you're in your neighborhood bar; you like it, you're comfortable there. Someone says "hey, a bunch of Nazis are meeting here in the bar now. The owner's not doing anything about them."What would you do?a) ask the owner to kick out the Nazisb) look into creating rules to keep the Nazis from coming backc) if a) and b) don't happen, find another bar. That's pretty much it.

@mterburg @michaelcoyote @OkieSpaceQueen @chillicampari Yeah, that's not a thing.Random complaints don't get instances defederated. Receipts are required, there's generally a conversation among admins and a fair amount of back and forth unless it's a *blatantly* bad shit-show. It takes a couple weeks to a month, generally, and the offending instance has to willfully refuse to implement reasonable moderation before they're actually defederated.

@nazgul @mterburg @michaelcoyote @OkieSpaceQueen @chillicampari Account transfer doesn't work if either instance is blocking the other. Defederation effectively removes the instance from the network, that's what it's for. With smaller blocks, look at why your instance is being blocked and whether or not you have a problem with it. (The blocks and reasons for them are usually public and visible on the instance About page.) Communities have their own threat models and act accordingly.

@nazgul @mterburg @michaelcoyote @OkieSpaceQueen @chillicampari For infosec.exchange, the issues I'm aware of are size (there are legitimate moderation issues for any community of thousands of accounts,) some explicit moderation / toxicity issues, and the acceptance / hosting of law enforcement and government accounts. You may reasonably say "well, that's ridiculous" and disagree with that choice - and it's worth noting that infosec.exchange hasn't been defederated on a large scale.

@nazgul @mterburg @michaelcoyote @OkieSpaceQueen @chillicampari But those are deal breakers for other communities, and they're allowed to make that call for themselves. So at that point, you get to vote with your feet. Either you stay on infosec.exchange because you disagree with the block, or you can move to another instance because you value the connection with your friend over staying where you are. That's not a judgement from me, btw. Both choices are valid.

@ghorwood @ifixcoinops I hear this kind of thing a lot and so far have a 100% "success" rate in determining the person who did the math did not, in fact, understand the math.

@publius @ghorwood @ifixcoinops For small business / artists and creators in particular, we bought into the pernicious myth that advertising could just be social media posts and activity. For a brief time, it was even true... but then you needed more time and money to make that work, then more, and more... today the only people I know personally making it "work" spend more time and money on their social media presence than any other aspect of their business.

@publius @ghorwood @ifixcoinops When I opened my studio (obligatory self-promotion https://glassandstone.art) I did a lot of advertising through different local and online venues. I spent hundreds of dollars a month here and there on different avenues and used different methods to track efficacy - coupon codes, surveys. The *only* cost-effective method was the $100 vinyl sign placed to catch the eye of traffic departing the Target next door. 90% of new customers cited it.Banner ads. Who knew?

Whelp, I was potentially exposed to COVID-19 in last Sunday's class, so I have been masking and isolating as much as possible and testing every day, all negatives. But I had some symptoms starting Tuesday that weren't quite "ah, yes, COVID" and also the sadly familiar pain of a kidney stone.Today I finally went to the doctor, they agreed it was most likely just a kidney stone but tested just to make sure... And I've got COVID. *And* a 5+mm kidney stone.Dislike.
