@foone In “Conquests of Camelot” you pray to both Christ and Mithras before heading out (if you know what’s good for you). And since you’re King Arthur, you’re basically your own boss, so…

@futurebird Yeah... There are similar issues in Japan around places like Mt. Fuji. Over here, when you take a closer look, you often find that the people complaining usually never wanted more random tourists in the first place (e.g. local residents who weren't in desperate need of tourist dollars). But it's silly to blame tourists for seeing government-sponsored PR that says "Mt. Fuji is the soul of Japan! An unmissable sight!" and then deciding they want to see it.

@futurebird You’re so right. People underestimate how primally most of us want to be heard, acknowledged, etc. Communication, including linguistic communication, is so much more than encoded logical propositions. I mean even something as simple as ELIZA made folks feel heard and cared for! Imagine how much better we can do with showing that we are listening AND actully caring.

@futurebird @apLundell “I know what would make my body plan less creepy—growing things out of jutting bone, and housing them inside a sort of soft, wet, intermittently opening pouch with a big muscle flopping and flexing around inside," said no species ever.

@futurebird Maybe ant scientists are like “Are humans even conscious? Their collaborations are spotty and conditional, and they seem not even to notice their own scent, let alone recognize it. Incredibly, they must resort to simple heuristics, such as identifying as the source or ‘dealer’ of an odor to the first individual to sense it. (They appear to react to reflected light but their primitive water-balloon eyes are clearly insufficient for true image capture)”

@gloriouscow I’m not going to name names but I have heard film scholars argue that it’s okay to use AI-upscaled stills in books because it only shows the original, but in better detail. It was a big moment in my radicalization because it brought home that not even professional thinkers whose entire careers involve images, artifice, suggestion, subtext, are necessarily willing or able to think critically about the things being marketed to them.
