@NanoRaptor This image is fake! The real one I owned in 1974 had flip-out metal handles on each module, the monitor was on rails, and the position-input device was a rolling ball floating upside in a cradle.

@textfiles What used to be in place of that missing-image icon on the right? If only there were a resource where one could search for previous versions of Web pages

@lauren I just searched for "Chinese balloon" on Google news and found stories within the past 2 days, on several major news services. USA blacklists Chinese firms over balloon case; New details disclosed; Chinese balloon part of worldwide fleet; etc. Stories about an event like that do tend to become less frequent after the event... isn't happening any more. At least I'm not being subjected to everyone-and-their-dog's opinionated tweets and toots about it anymore.

@lauren The phrase "very Musk" is correct here. There are other ways of phasing out 2FA by SMS (which I never use), but those would involve communicating with users, nudging them, making it worth their time, etc., the way my bank offered me some kind of bonus when it wanted me to move away from paper statements. Just cutting the service and leaving people exposed, to fend for themselves or adapt, is a total Silicon Valley Tech Bro move. Makes me even less interested in his cars.

@lauren Yes. I suppose a lot of those users aren't very active and he just wants them off, or to facilitate the accounts being hijacked by someone who will be more active, e.g. by tweeting more robo-spam, which he clearly doesn't mind so long as it appears to boost engagement numbers.

@lauren What's not clear is whether he can command the loyalty of Trump's fans, especially if Trump mocks and belittles him. Without that loyalty, he's just another reactionary Southern governor, like Bobby Jindal.

@lauren That is true. It's not clear. But I think that fact is too often forgotten -- that it's not clear. Politics is rough, contenders rise and flame-out all the time, and Trump + his circumstances were arguably sui-generis. There are a lot of *potentially* very dangerous people in politics, who only *actually* become as dangerous as the amount of power they get.

@lauren The kind of advertisers he has now, will not be fazed. I saw tooth whitening, and the church of Scientology go by in one thread today

@rdaily But can cats ride on it? This is the central question which you have suspiciously avoided addressing.

@textfiles From reading the statement, it seems that the YouTube videos would only be deleted if the user is inactive on their entire Google account for 2 years, not just YouTube. I'm sure they have the authority to just delete stuff arbitrarily with no announcement and no user recourse, so the fact that they're saying anything at all is positive. But you're right: in any case Dead People Stuff is an issue

@adam I've noticed the same; I'm on a small instance & activity has fallen off; some active members have quit tooting, and one local who used to cross-post from Twitter has stopped doing so. It's disappointing but not surprising. Mastodon by design has a kind of Linux-on-the-desktop feel to it. One needs to make decisions around instance, tools, strategies. That's the price we pay for not being in some tech oligarch's walled garden. Watch what Cory Doctorow does here: he's the bellweather.
